For a 1080p aquarium loop sourced at 30 fps, start with H.264, CBR, RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval, and 14 Mbps video bitrate. For a 60 fps source, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is 17 Mbps. Test the full setup before relying on it: a continuous stream may not be archived if it runs longer than 12 hours, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable.
Recommended 1080p settings
The settings below follow YouTube’s encoder guidance checked in 2026. The bitrate figures are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the stream.
| Setting | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | H.264 |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | 60 fps |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS preferred | RTMPS preferred |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR for a straightforward SDR feed | Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR for a straightforward SDR feed |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps |
Use the source’s frame rate when possible. For a mostly still aquarium scene captured at 30 fps, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; it is an editorial choice, not a YouTube rule. Choose 60 fps when the source and desired motion rendering call for it, and ensure your upload can support the higher recommended bitrate. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but use a codec your encoder supports reliably and consult YouTube’s current settings table for that codec’s bitrate guidance: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Prepare and test the loop before going live
Check the video, audio, and upload path
- Make sure the video file plays through cleanly and loops without an unintended black frame, abrupt cut, or distracting audio jump.
- Choose a frame rate that matches the source. Avoid converting a 30 fps recording to 60 fps just to select a higher output setting.
- Test upload capacity under the same network conditions you expect during the stream. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is an encoder target, not proof your connection can sustain it.
- Run a test stream with representative aquarium motion and audio, then check both playback quality and stream health before leaving it unattended.
Choose software or hardware encoding
YouTube’s live guidance documents software encoding as an option. It describes professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, so dedicated hardware is optional rather than a requirement for an ordinary aquarium loop. Choose the encoder you can configure and monitor reliably.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, select the encoder workflow and locate the server URL and stream key.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Use the server URL and key provided by YouTube; select RTMPS where available, then configure the bitrate, codec, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with someone who should not be able to broadcast on the channel.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, then verify the video and audio before going live.
- Go live and monitor the stream. Watch for connection or quality problems during the test, especially after a loop transition. YouTube’s workflow and live tips are described in YouTube Live encoder setup.
Plan for the 24-hour archive and viewer rewind limits
A 24/7 broadcast and a complete saved replay are different things. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, keep a local recording and plan how to retain it; YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee an archive for a long uninterrupted session. See Archive live streams.
Viewers also may not be able to pause and rewind the full duration: YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See Use DVR on live streams. If a replay or rewind access is important, account for those limitations rather than assuming one continuous 24-hour broadcast will behave like a short event.

Rights and monetization considerations
Use footage and audio you have permission to broadcast
You need the necessary rights for the live video and audio. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches; it may replace a stream with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate it if the matched material remains. A Content ID claim can also be made after the stream ends if it is archived. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its Terms of Service.
Do not assume a loop will qualify for monetization
If you seek YouTube Partner Program monetization, the channel and stream are subject to YouTube’s monetization policies. YouTube says monetized content should be original and authentic, not mass-produced or repetitive. That policy alone cannot predict whether a particular aquarium loop will pass review; the footage, presentation, channel context, and meaningful creative or educational value all matter. Check YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or a connection issue | Copy the current URL and key from the Live Control Room, check the encoder’s connection status, and confirm the channel is eligible to stream. |
| Stream health is unstable or video drops | The upload connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate consistently | Test upload capacity under expected conditions. Compare the encoder bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate; do not treat the minimum as a guarantee of stable service. |
| Motion looks choppy or unnecessarily soft | The output frame rate differs from the source, or the bitrate does not suit the chosen mode | Match the source frame rate where possible, then test 30 versus 60 fps with representative motion and the relevant H.264 recommendation. |
| The loop plays, but its replay is missing or incomplete | The continuous stream exceeded YouTube’s automatic archive guidance | Keep a local recording if a replay matters; a stream over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. |
| Viewers cannot rewind far back | DVR may be limited or unavailable on a stream longer than 12 hours | Do not promise rewind across the full continuous broadcast; consider how viewers will access any saved recording. |
| The stream is replaced or interrupted after a content match | Video or audio may match third-party material | Use content for which you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s live copyright guidance. |
