For a pre-recorded portrait video, send a 9:16 feed at 1080×1920 and check YouTube’s vertical preview before starting the event. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate suited to your codec and frame rate. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate recommendation for portrait 1080×1920, so its 1080p figures are guidance—not a vertical-specific requirement.
Choose how YouTube will get the vertical picture
YouTube Live can present vertical video to mobile viewers, and vertical streams may be discoverable in the Shorts feed. The way you supply the portrait picture matters: a crop derived from a horizontal feed can cut off a video composed specifically for portrait.
Use a purpose-built vertical feed
If your recording is already 1080×1920, preserve the full 9:16 frame in the encoder output. YouTube’s dual-stream workflow also allows a third-party encoder to send horizontal and vertical feeds using RTMP(S); the vertical feed uses a second stream key. Match each feed to its corresponding key and check the vertical preview before going live. See YouTube Help’s guidance on dual streaming.
Let Live Control Room derive a vertical version
Live Control Room can create a vertical center crop from a horizontal stream. Its layout options include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. These may work for a horizontal video, but a crop can remove important content from a portrait composition. Inspect the vertical preview and choose a layout that keeps the intended picture visible.

Recommended encoder settings for 1080×1920
Set the output to portrait 9:16 at 1080×1920 and, where practical, match the recording’s frame rate. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate in Live Control Room. Its published bitrate table is organized by resolution, frame rate, and codec—not by portrait orientation. Treat the following 1080p recommendations as starting points, not guarantees of quality or special rules for vertical video.
| Output frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help | 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help | 17 Mbps recommended by YouTube Help |
Use a rate your upload connection can sustain steadily. A bitrate that exceeds available upload capacity can cause interruptions or degraded stream health; test the actual setup rather than assuming the recommendation fits your connection. YouTube lists minimum bitrate values as well as recommendations in its encoder settings guidance.

- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, as supported by your encoder.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s guidance lists stereo audio at 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
- Connection: RTMP(S); YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection.
Set up the scheduled or immediate Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and create the event. Go to Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Scheduling can give viewers a page to visit and enable reminders. Follow YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
- Select the delivery approach. For a purpose-built portrait feed, configure the encoder to send 1080×1920. For a horizontal feed that YouTube turns into a vertical presentation, open the vertical layout canvas and choose center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked. If sending separate horizontal and vertical feeds through an encoder, choose the dual-stream Encoder/RTMP(S) option and use the second stream key for the vertical feed.
- Set and check the encoder output. Apply the settings above, preserve the portrait frame, and confirm that each feed is mapped to the matching stream key. YouTube’s encoder connection instructions are at YouTube Help.
- Copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. Paste them into the corresponding fields in the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it.
- Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Check the vertical composition, audio, and stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before an event; do not start for viewers until the preview is correct.
- Start the event in Studio. After the feed is arriving and the preview looks right, start the stream from Live Control Room. Keep an eye on stream health while it runs.
- End the event cleanly. End the stream in YouTube Studio and stop sending from the encoder according to your setup. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Check the recording and channel before streaming
Protect the portrait composition
- Make sure essential text, faces, and action remain inside the 9:16 frame.
- For a crop generated from a horizontal feed, inspect the vertical preview rather than relying on the horizontal program view.
- For separately composed feeds, verify that the vertical feed uses its own matching key and format.
Confirm rights and eligibility
Only stream material you have the rights to use. A video being pre-recorded does not remove copyright obligations. YouTube’s live and fan-funding features may depend on channel eligibility; vertical format alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee placement in the vertical Live feed.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The vertical preview cuts off the video: A horizontal feed may be using a center crop. Try fit to phone width or stacked, or send a separately composed 1080×1920 feed. Check the preview again before starting.
- The vertical feed is missing or mapped incorrectly: In the encoder’s dual-stream setup, confirm that the vertical output is mapped to the second stream key and that each format matches its corresponding key.
- The stream buffers or reports poor health: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce the bitrate if needed, keep CBR enabled, and run another test before the event.
- The picture or audio does not appear as expected: Confirm the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio format; then inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live.
- The encoder does not connect: Recheck the stream URL and key copied from Live Control Room, and confirm the encoder is using the intended RTMP(S) connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than operate an encoder at home, StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer, OBS, and home connection can be off. The uploaded video streams at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
