For a prerecorded video sent to YouTube Live through an encoder at 4K/2160p and 30 fps, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. Those are live-ingest recommendations; a regular 4K video upload uses a different bitrate recommendation. The right setting depends on the codec your live encoder sends to YouTube, not just the codec of the source file.
Recommended live bitrate by codec
YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, accessed in 2026, list these targets for 4K/2160p at 30 fps. YouTube does not state a publication year for the page.
| Live-ingest video codec | Recommended bitrate | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use the recommendation for the codec actually sent over the live ingest connection. The lower HEVC/AV1 figure is not a guarantee of identical picture quality to H.264, and YouTube’s table does not establish that one codec is universally better. H.264 is the straightforward choice when using a broadly supported H.264 live workflow; choose another codec only if your encoder and ingest route support it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Live streaming a prerecorded file is different from uploading it
If you send a finished video file through a live encoder, use the live-ingest figures above. For a standard prerecorded 4K upload at 24, 25, or 30 fps, YouTube instead recommends 35–45 Mbps. That upload recommendation is not a substitute for the codec-specific live settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Encoder settings that matter
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
- Rate control: set bitrate encoding to CBR.
- Keyframes: use a 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s listed guidance supports up to 60 fps. This recommendation is for 30 fps.
- Color and bit depth: for SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, its settings identify H.265/HEVC and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR in the described settings.
The file’s original encoding does not, by itself, tell you which live bitrate table applies. Check the codec configured for output from the encoder to YouTube. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the full current guidance.
Plan enough upload bandwidth
The stream uses your available outbound upload capacity. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For a 42 Mbps video setting, adding 20% gives about 50.4 Mbps before audio, other network traffic, or capacity fluctuations. This is a planning calculation from YouTube’s margin, not a separate published speed threshold.

Use a reliable upload-speed test and account for other people and devices sharing the connection. Advertised download speed does not establish that you have sufficient upload capacity. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth margin and network considerations.
Test the stream before the event
- Configure the live encoder with the intended codec, 4K/2160p resolution, 30 fps, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Check that stable upload capacity can carry the total video and audio bitrate with the recommended headroom.
- Run a test before going live using audio and movement similar to the real stream. A static test image may not reveal issues that appear with motion or sound.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health during the event and respond to warnings rather than assuming a successful connection alone means the stream is stable. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health.
Latency at 4K
YouTube’s documented settings do not offer the low-latency option at 4K/2160p. As YouTube puts it, “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available.” Under these settings, 4K streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency; do not plan on the low-latency mode available at other configurations.

Copyright and prerecorded content
Having a finished file does not grant permission to broadcast its music, footage, or other material. Before sending a prerecorded video through a live encoder, confirm you have the rights needed for the content and that it complies with YouTube’s rules. A bitrate setting cannot prevent a copyright claim or resolve a reused-content issue.

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo can do that without leaving a computer or home connection running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
