Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a 1080p slideshow at 30 fps, YouTube’s recommended live ingestion bitrate is 14 Mbps with H.264, or 10 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. At 60 fps, the recommendations are 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are general YouTube settings, not special lower targets for still images. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a connection with about 20% upload headroom; then test the actual slides, transitions, and audio before going live.
Choose a bitrate that matches your stream
Use the YouTube recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate your encoder will send. The table below lists YouTube’s published minimum and recommended ingestion rates in Mbps. A minimum is not the target to aim for if you want operating room; the recommended figure is the appropriate starting point when your connection can sustain it.
| Resolution / frame rate | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |

These are the official YouTube recommendations available on its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page, retrieved October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication year. They describe incoming stream settings, not a guarantee of visual quality or a slideshow-specific bitrate. YouTube detects the incoming settings and transcodes the stream for different devices and network conditions.
Does a slideshow need less bitrate?
YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate recommendation for slideshows. Still frames may change less often than gameplay or camera footage, but transitions, animated elements, and other motion still affect the encoded video. Follow the matching YouTube row rather than assuming that still images justify a particular reduction. For a static slideshow, 30 fps is a sensible starting choice; use 60 fps only when the source or transitions benefit from the extra motion smoothness and your encoder and upload connection can support it.

Set the encoder and check upload capacity
- Choose resolution and frame rate. Match the output to the images, any motion or transitions, and the viewing quality you need. For a slideshow without fast motion, consider 1080p30 before choosing a higher frame rate.
- Choose a supported ingestion codec. Select H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 if your encoder supports it, then use the corresponding bitrate recommendation in the table. YouTube’s ingest recommendations differ by codec, so do not copy an H.264 value into an AV1 or H.265 setup.
- Set rate control to CBR. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for live streams.
- Set keyframe frequency to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Check real outbound upload capacity. YouTube says the total outgoing stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. Run an upload speed test, account for other devices and people sharing the connection, and use a bitrate that remains stable rather than relying on a brief peak.
- Include backup streams in the calculation. If you send primary and backup streams, add both bitrates before checking the available capacity.
Encoder settings are chosen in the encoder; the YouTube Live Control Room detects the incoming settings. An encoder can be software or standalone hardware. The OBS workflow below uses software, so buying an encoder device is not a prerequisite.
Set up a repeating slideshow or media playlist in OBS
Choose the OBS source that matches the content. OBS’s Image Slide Show source is for still images; VLC Video is for a playlist of video or audio media files. The documented OBS pages for these sources are dated January 11, 2022.

| Source | Use it for | Controls relevant to a repeating playlist |
|---|---|---|
| Image Slide Show | Image files or directories of images | Automatic or manual mode, transitions, slide timing, looping, and randomized playback |
| VLC Video | Video or audio media files | Playlist playback, loop, and shuffle; VLC must be installed for the source to be available |
Loop still images with Image Slide Show
- In OBS, add an Image Slide Show source to the scene.
- Select individual image files or directories containing the images.
- Choose automatic playback or manual slide changes. For an unattended stream, automatic playback is generally the practical choice.
- Set a transition and timing that suit the material. OBS documents Fade as the default transition, 8,000 milliseconds between slides, and 700 milliseconds for transition speed. These are defaults, not recommended durations for every slideshow.
- Enable Loop if the slideshow should restart after its last image. Choose randomized playback if order does not matter; otherwise preserve the listed order.
Loop a playlist of video or audio files
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
- Add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the media files.
- Enable the source’s playlist loop control if it should repeat, and choose shuffle only if randomized order is wanted.
Use the VLC source for media playlists, not as a substitute for the dedicated still-image slideshow source.
Test the stream before broadcasting
Make the test resemble the real broadcast: let the slides advance, include the actual transitions, and include audio if the stream will have it. YouTube’s encoder guidance specifically recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check the stream preview and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the event. A successful connection alone does not establish that the complete slideshow, audio, and loop behave as intended.

Troubleshoot common slideshow stream problems
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: The upload connection may not reliably support the chosen total bitrate. Check outbound capacity, reduce the output bitrate or resolution using the matching YouTube recommendation as a guide, and retest with other household or office network use in mind.
- Video stutters or frames are lost: Check whether upload capacity is fluctuating or being shared, and confirm the encoder is using CBR and the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Try a lower output setting if the connection cannot maintain the current rate.
- The slideshow stops at the final image: Confirm that Loop is enabled on the Image Slide Show source. If using VLC Video, check its playlist loop control instead.
- Images appear in the wrong order: Turn off randomized playback and verify the files or directories selected for the source.
- A VLC playlist source is missing: Install VLC, which is required for OBS’s VLC Video source to be available; use Image Slide Show for still-image files.
- Audio is absent or transitions look wrong: Include the intended audio and transitions in a test broadcast, then check the source configuration and the stream preview before the real event.
Check rights and YouTube live eligibility
Having permission to use an image, song, or video is a separate issue from configuring bitrate. Make sure the material in the slideshow and any accompanying audio is authorized for your use and does not violate YouTube’s policies. A playlist that loops successfully is not, by itself, evidence that the content complies with copyright rules or YouTube’s monetization requirements. Review the relevant terms for your content before making the stream public.
