If YouTube says a live stream or its archive is “blocked in some countries or regions,” open the video’s copyright details in YouTube Studio and check the matched content, claimant, affected territories, and available actions. The notice usually describes a territorial Content ID claim—not, by itself, a removal or copyright strike. What to do next depends on whether the stream is still live, the video is archived, or YouTube has removed it after a formal copyright request.
First, identify what happened to the video
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. A Content ID claimant can choose to block a video globally or in selected territories, or to monetize or track it. Monetize and track claims leave the video available; a territorial block makes it unavailable where the claimant’s policy applies. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its overview of Content ID claims explain these distinctions.
A blocked-in-some-countries notice alone does not mean the video was taken down or that your channel received a strike. An archived live stream can receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends if you choose to archive it. A formal copyright removal request is a separate process; if YouTube accepts one, it removes the content and applies a copyright strike.
Check the exact status in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and find the affected live-stream archive or video.
- Open the copyright restriction or claim details, then select Copyright Details if that option appears. YouTube says this area identifies the detected material.
- Read the matched content, claimant, affected territories, and actions YouTube offers for this specific claim. Available actions can differ, including when a contractual restriction applies.
- Confirm whether the video is still live, remains viewable in some places as an archive, or has been removed after a copyright removal request. Do not treat these states as interchangeable.

If the stream is still live
Deal with the match while the broadcast is ongoing. YouTube warns that continued third-party content may interrupt or terminate a live stream. Stop or remove the matched material and follow the on-screen warning. If you have a license, contact the rights owner and ask them to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent interruption while the channel is not allowlisted.
Do not assume that a claim on a live stream will be resolved by disputing it after the broadcast. First protect the live channel by addressing the warning; then review any claim on the archive separately.
If the archive is blocked in selected territories
Choose a response based on your rights and the options shown in Studio. If you do not have the necessary rights, consider removing or replacing the matched material where YouTube offers that option, or accept the claimant’s policy. If you do have a defensible basis, preserve the relevant records before deciding whether to dispute or appeal.

You have a license
Check that the license covers the specific recording or composition, your use, YouTube, and the territories in question. Ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID. Keep the license and the owner’s confirmation in case you need to explain your position.

Gather evidence showing your rights or why the match is wrong, then consider an initial dispute if Studio offers it. The claimant reviews an initial dispute; YouTube says it does not decide ownership disputes for creators. The claimant has 30 days to respond to an initial dispute under YouTube’s current guidance. You believe a copyright exception applies
Fair use, fair dealing, and other exceptions depend on the facts and can differ by jurisdiction. Assess the actual use rather than assuming that commentary, gameplay, a short clip, or a noncommercial purpose automatically qualifies. If the legal basis is uncertain, consider getting advice from a qualified lawyer before taking a formal step.

You do not have a sound basis to challenge the claim
Giving credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize does not by itself establish a right to use the material. YouTube lists these as insufficient reasons for a dispute. Do not dispute merely to try to restore access quickly; use an available removal or replacement action, or leave the claimant’s policy in place.
Understand disputes, appeals, takedowns, and counter notifications

YouTube’s procedural time limits are not promises that a particular claim will be resolved in your favor. Read the notice and instructions for the affected video before acting. Some blocks tied to YouTube’s contractual obligations may not offer Content ID appeal or counter-notification options; use the actions Studio actually presents.

An appeal is a stronger escalation than an initial dispute. It can be available after a rejected dispute, and some eligible blocked videos offer “Escalate to Appeal” to skip the first step. The claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. If rejected, the claimant may file a copyright removal request; if that request is valid, the video can be removed and the channel can receive a strike. Consider an appeal only if your evidence and legal basis support it. A faster route to review is not the same as a safer route, and a desire to restore views is not itself a reason to assert rights you do not have.

Check whether the notice says the video was removed following a copyright removal request. If so, review the request and any scheduled-removal deadline. YouTube says some scheduled requests provide seven days to act before removal and a strike. Follow the options in the notice; a territorial Content ID block does not use this same process.
If the content has already been removed and you genuinely believe the takedown was mistaken or based on misidentification, a counter notification may be available. It is a legal request, and YouTube warns not to submit false information. YouTube forwards a valid counter notification to the claimant; after forwarding, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content down. Because the claimant receives the information in your counter notification, consider the personal information involved before submitting it. See YouTube’s counter-notification guidance.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Assuming a territorial block is a strike: Check the video’s status and notice in Studio. A Content ID block and a removal-request strike are different events.
- Leaving matched material in a live broadcast: Stop or remove it and follow the warning; continuing the material may interrupt or terminate the stream.
- Relying on a license without allowlisting: Ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel, and verify that the license covers the relevant use and territories.
- Disputing because you gave credit or bought a copy: Those facts do not establish permission to use the material. Dispute only with a sound rights, exception, or misidentification basis.
- Using a counter notification for a regional block: Counter notifications concern content removed after a formal copyright removal request. Review the specific action Studio offers instead.
- Assuming every blocked video offers the same appeal route: Check Studio. A contractual restriction may limit the processes available for a particular video.
