If your YouTube live stream freezes, first find out whether OBS is struggling to render the scene, encode video, or send it over your connection. These are different problems with different fixes. Check OBS Stats and its log during a short test, then reduce the workload that matches the warning instead of changing every setting—or buying hardware—at once.
Why does a YouTube live stream freeze on a low-end PC?
“Freezing” describes what you see, not the cause. A game can feel responsive while OBS falls behind, because OBS also needs GPU resources to composite and render the scene. Alternatively, OBS may encode slowly, frames may be dropped while sending the stream, or viewers may be buffering.
OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting explains that scene compositing and rendering use GPU time. Its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting treats dropped frames and connection trouble separately from encoding performance. Don’t assume that being in India is itself the cause: these symptoms depend on the PC, workload, OBS settings, and the stability of the connection being used.
Identify which kind of slowdown you have
- Rendering lag: OBS cannot render the scene quickly enough. GPU load, demanding game settings, uncapped game frame rates, complex scenes, filters, and browser sources can contribute.
- Encoding lag: OBS cannot encode frames quickly enough with the selected encoder and settings. Resolution, frame rate, encoder compatibility, and overall workload all matter.
- Dropped frames or viewer buffering: the stream is not reaching viewers reliably. Investigate sustained upload stability and bitrate separately; this symptom alone does not show that the CPU needs an upgrade.
How to diagnose OBS before changing settings
- Run a short test stream or recording and open View > Stats in OBS. Watch the indicators for rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames. Note which one rises when the freeze happens.
- Save an OBS log from the same session. The log can help distinguish performance warnings from a connection symptom. Record the OBS version, the game, output resolution and FPS, selected encoder, and when the problem occurred.
- Match the fix to the evidence. Rendering or encoding lag calls for reducing workload or changing to a compatible encoder. Dropped frames or viewer buffering calls for checking the connection and bitrate.
- Change one setting at a time. Repeat a short test after each change so you can tell whether it helped, and use a private or unlisted test stream before a scheduled live session.
OBS recommends testing before going live in its OBS Studio Overview Guide. Its System Requirements page also cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording with OBS: actual requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Reduce rendering and encoding load in OBS
Lower output resolution or frame rate
In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce the output resolution or frame rate, then test. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps. Both changes can reduce the work OBS must do; which is the better trade-off depends on the game and how much detail or motion matters to viewers. Keep the base canvas unchanged at first if possible: OBS describes lowering it as a more disruptive step for systems with severe GPU constraints.
Free GPU time for OBS
- Lower demanding graphics options in the game.
- Cap the game’s frame rate to the display refresh rate, or enable V-Sync, rather than letting the game use all available GPU capacity.
- Close programs you know are using substantial GPU resources, if you opened them for the session.
- On Windows, try launching OBS with Run as administrator. OBS suggests this because Windows may otherwise reserve GPU capacity in a way that leaves OBS struggling to render.
Simplify the scene
Hide or remove sources you do not need, disable unnecessary filters, and reduce browser sources. These changes can ease compositing and rendering without lowering the game’s own visual settings. Test a simpler scene before making more disruptive changes to the canvas or the game.

Choose an encoder your PC actually supports
In Settings > Output, check the encoder options available on your machine. OBS generally recommends a compatible hardware encoder because encoding is handled by a specialized component rather than relying only on CPU-based x264 software encoding. The relevant option might be NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync, but availability depends on the GPU or integrated graphics, its generation, drivers, and OBS support. Do not assume that a particular PC has a suitable encoder.
Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work, but older hardware encoder generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate. The right choice depends on the actual hardware and the result of a test. OBS documents these trade-offs in Hardware Encoding. Its Advanced NVENC Options (31.0) guidance is version-specific; it is not a reason to copy NVENC settings onto a PC that does not support them.

If OBS shows dropped frames or viewers report buffering
Do not treat a network problem as an encoding problem. Check whether the OBS Stats counter for dropped frames rises, measure sustained upload stability during the time you intend to stream, and compare the bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance for your stream setup. OBS says bitrate depends on both upload speed and the streaming service; a lower bitrate may also suit viewers with weaker connections. The evidence here does not establish a universal bitrate or current YouTube ingest limit, so avoid copying a number without checking YouTube’s current recommendations and your own connection.
If encoding and rendering indicators remain clear but viewers still buffer, keep investigating the network path and bitrate rather than lowering PC settings blindly. A stable-looking speed test at one moment does not establish sustained upload performance during a live session.

Which change should you try first?
| Observed symptom | First changes to test | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Rendering lag | Cap game FPS or enable V-Sync; lower game graphics; simplify scenes and sources; close known GPU-heavy apps. | Game presentation may change. Retest Stats after each change. |
| Encoding lag | Lower output resolution or FPS in Settings > Video; try 30 fps if 60 fps is unstable; test a compatible hardware encoder in Settings > Output. | Resolution and frame rate affect presentation. Encoder support and quality depend on hardware generation and drivers. |
| Dropped frames or buffering | Check sustained upload stability and compare bitrate with current YouTube guidance. | Do not infer CPU overload from this symptom alone. |
There is no evidence-backed universal OBS preset, encoder, or bitrate for every low-end PC or Indian connection. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point, but verify the result with a test stream. For a specific diagnosis, gather your CPU and GPU or integrated graphics model, OBS version and log, output resolution and FPS, selected encoder, and a sustained upload result.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing many settings at once: you will not know what fixed—or worsened—the issue. Make one change and retest.
- Lowering bitrate to fix encoding lag: bitrate relates to how much data is sent; first determine whether the problem is encoding, rendering, or dropped frames.
- Buying a GPU before checking Stats and logs: the cause may be scene complexity, game settings, encoder choice, or the connection. Start with the evidence and existing hardware.
- Copying a setting from another PC: resolution, FPS, scene complexity, encoder generation, and upload stability vary. A setting that works elsewhere is not a diagnosis for your system.
