Find the first place the picture turns green—source preview, local recording, Live Control Room preview, or YouTube playback—then inspect the pixel-format and color-conversion path at that stage. Changing -pix_fmt yuv420p may be worth testing in a controlled comparison, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Find where the picture first turns green
Compare the same video at each stage of the pipeline. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance notes that poor-looking live video can originate in the audio or video sources routed to the encoder; an output codec change cannot reliably repair a source that is already green.
- Check the source preview. Look at the camera, capture device, decoded input, or other video source before encoding. If it is already green, investigate that input and its connection or decoding before changing H.264 options.
- Record locally from the same FFmpeg input and filter graph. Compare the file with the source preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. A green local recording points toward the input, filters, pixel-format conversion, or encoder path. If the local file is clean but Live Control Room is green, focus on the emitted stream and ingest path.
- Check YouTube playback separately. If Live Control Room looks correct but a later playback is green, the problem may be downstream of the encoder or preview. Preserve the local sample and note which playback and device show the issue.
YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health during it. Change one variable at a time and keep a known-good local sample so you can tell whether a change actually affected the image.
Inspect FFmpeg’s pixel formats and conversion path
Read the actual build and logs
Check the FFmpeg version and build configuration, then review startup and output logs for the selected video stream, decoder output pixel format, filter inputs and outputs, and encoder output format. Do not assume every FFmpeg installation exposes the same encoder capabilities: support for pixel formats in the libx264 wrapper depends on how FFmpeg was built.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Also distinguish libx264 from libx264rgb. The latter accepts packed RGB input; ordinary libx264 does not offer the same input path. They are not interchangeable without considering the formats produced by the decoder and filters and accepted by the encoder in your build.
Trace every color conversion
Inspect the filter graph for RGB-to-YUV or YUV-to-YUV conversion, scaling, range changes, and color-space handling. A green cast can arise somewhere in this path, but the symptom alone cannot identify which operation is responsible.

A 2013 FFmpeg-user report described a subtle green tint in one RGB/YUV conversion workflow, particularly around conversion to yuv420p and scaling. It is a historical report of a particular workflow, not evidence that yuv420p generally causes green video. If you test a different pixel format or filter order, compare short local recordings made from the same source and change only that variable.
Check YouTube ingest settings without treating them as a color cure
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR (10-bit HDR).

These are ingest compatibility and quality recommendations; YouTube does not say that breaking one of them causes a green image. Check them as part of a sound configuration, but continue tracing the picture if the color is wrong.
Choose bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates illustrate why settings should match the stream rather than be copied from an unrelated command:

| H.264 stream | YouTube minimum ingest bitrate | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures address stream quality and reliability, not a uniquely green-image failure. Select bitrate using YouTube’s guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, and ensure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the stream.
Run a controlled test before going live
- Use a representative source with movement and audio, not just a static frame.
- Record locally with the same input and filter graph used for the stream.
- Check the local file and the Live Control Room preview for color, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- If you change a pixel format, filter, encoder, or color setting, change one at a time and repeat the comparison.
- Keep a known-good local sample and note the command, FFmpeg build, and settings used for each test.
Common green-video cases and what to check
- The source preview is green: investigate the camera, capture device, decoded input, or routed source first. An output encoder setting is unlikely to repair an already-green picture.
- The source is clean but the local recording is green: inspect the decoder output format, filters, scaling, RGB/YUV conversions, range and color-space handling, and the encoder’s accepted format.
- The local file is clean but Live Control Room is green: focus on the emitted stream and its ingest path. Confirm the selected encoder and output format from the FFmpeg logs, and compare the live settings with YouTube’s recommendations.
- Only a particular FFmpeg setup fails: verify its version, build configuration, and actual format negotiation. Encoder-wrapper support can vary between builds.
- Changing to
yuv420pdoes not help: do not keep treating that format as a universal cure. Return to the stage-by-stage comparison and test the specific conversion or filter suspected.
What is needed to identify the exact cause
A reliable diagnosis requires the exact FFmpeg command and relevant complete startup/output log, FFmpeg version and build configuration, source codec and pixel format, filter graph, and a local recording made through the same pipeline. It also matters whether green appears in the source preview, local recording, Live Control Room preview, or only in YouTube playback. Without those details, naming one failing codec option would be guesswork.
