If your YouTube live stream is sent from an encoder running on your Windows PC, the computer going to sleep can stop the encoder from sending video. Set Windows to keep the PC awake for the broadcast; you can still let the screen turn off. On a laptop, also check what happens when you close the lid.
Keep Windows awake while your stream is running
The encoder is part of the broadcast path: YouTube’s setup process uses an encoder configured with the YouTube server URL and stream key. If the computer running it sleeps, do not expect the encoder to keep sending the live feed. Microsoft describes sleep as a system power state, separate from simply turning off the display. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide shows separate controls for these timeouts.
Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the power condition you will use, such as When plugged in, set Make my device sleep after to Never or to a duration longer than the planned broadcast.
- If you may stream on battery, set the timeout under the battery condition separately. Windows has distinct plugged-in and on-battery settings.
- Choose Turn my screen off after independently. The display can turn off while the PC stays awake.
- Start a short broadcast and check that the PC remains awake for its duration.
Windows 10
Open Settings > System > Power & sleep and adjust the screen and sleep timeouts for the power condition you will use. Labels can vary by Windows build and device. Check both plugged-in and battery settings if either condition may apply. If the PC still sleeps when you close its lid or press the power button, inspect Additional power settings and the related lid and button actions. Microsoft’s sleep and shutdown guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and notes that many laptops sleep when their lid is closed.
Check laptop lid and power-button actions
A sleep timeout is not the only setting that can put a laptop to sleep. Before relying on a closed-lid setup, check the lid-close action; also check what the power button does if you use it during a broadcast. Many laptops and tablets sleep when the lid is closed or the power button is pressed. Set those actions deliberately rather than assuming the idle timeout controls them.

Why a display timeout is not a sleep fix
Turning the screen off only blanks the display; putting the computer to sleep suspends normal operation. For a stream sent from an encoder on that PC, the relevant setting is Make my device sleep after, not the display timeout. This distinction lets you save power by switching off the monitor without asking Windows to sleep the streaming host.
Understand Windows timeout defaults
Microsoft’s Windows 11 power-settings article gives example default timeout changes by device sleep type. They are device-category defaults, not universal settings or recommended streaming durations:

If the stream still disconnects while the PC is awake
If Windows stays awake but the stream drops, investigate the network connection and the encoder or YouTube connection status as separate causes. A Wi-Fi power-saving setting is relevant when Wi-Fi disconnects during sleep; it does not prevent the PC itself from sleeping. Microsoft documents Wi-Fi disconnection options in some Windows configurations, with labels that can vary by version. Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance is a secondary check, not a substitute for setting the sleep timeout.

For encoder setup, YouTube’s guide explains the server URL and stream key workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends RTMPS. These checks address a connection or encoder problem; they do not keep a sleeping Windows host awake.
Avoid using Away mode as the general fix
Windows Away mode is intended for cases where media applications need to keep doing background work while the computer appears asleep. Microsoft cautions against using it when it is not necessary, particularly on portable computers. For a PC-based live encoder, configure the ordinary sleep timeout instead.
