Change the quality for the stream you’re watching

Tap the stream’s player, then tap Settings → Quality. The precise labels or menu placement can vary by device, app version, and locale.

If YouTube offers Advanced, open it to see manual resolution choices, then select the highest one that plays reliably. Some streams or devices do not show Advanced or every resolution.

If the image becomes sharper but playback starts buffering, lower the resolution one step or switch to Auto. A higher-quality setting can use more data and buffer more often.

YouTube Help explains that it changes stream quality according to viewing conditions. Connection speed is one factor; player or screen size, the original video quality, and browser support can matter too. YouTube’s guide to changing video quality describes the available playback controls.
Set a mobile-network preference
To make a choice that applies beyond the current stream, use the YouTube app’s profile picture → Settings → Video quality preferences. Choose how video should play on mobile networks; Wi-Fi can have a separate preference. Available choices include Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, and Advanced, though labels and availability may vary.

These are playback preferences, not a promise that every live stream will be available at a particular resolution. The broadcaster’s incoming quality and the options YouTube exposes for the stream can limit what you can select.

If the picture keeps turning blocky

Compare on Wi-Fi. If the same stream looks better on Wi-Fi, try it again where mobile reception is stronger. This comparison can help isolate a connection-related issue, but does not prove reception is the only cause.

Compare another video or stream. If other videos look sharp but one live stream does not, its incoming quality may be limiting the picture available to viewers. A viewer cannot change the broadcaster’s encoder settings.

Compare the app with a supported browser. YouTube lists browser support among the factors that can affect playback quality. If the problem appears only in one app or browser, that is a useful comparison, not proof that the platform is at fault.

Balance detail against steady playback. If a manual resolution repeatedly stalls, use Auto or a lower resolution rather than repeatedly forcing the highest option.
If you control the broadcast
Viewer quality controls and creator encoder settings solve different problems. YouTube advises streamers to choose a quality their connection can maintain, test upload bitrate and the stream before going live, and monitor stream health. Its H.264 examples include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are creator-side encoder recommendations, not required download speeds for someone watching on mobile. YouTube also says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.
