To broadcast a nonstop nature-video playlist on YouTube Live, play the files through an encoder such as OBS, loop the playlist in OBS, and send the encoded feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A regular YouTube playlist does not itself become a live broadcast. Set the encoder to match your footage and the upload connection, test the feed, and monitor it while live.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says channels must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
- OBS Studio and the nature-video files you are authorized to broadcast.
- VLC installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video source for multiple files.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the bitrate you choose.
Use footage and audio you own or have permission to stream. A live broadcast does not exempt you from YouTube’s copyright rules. YouTube may also assess a channel’s overall content under its monetization policies; looping footage does not guarantee monetization eligibility.
Choose how OBS plays the nature footage
| OBS source | Use it for | Loop behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One long video file | Enable the source’s Loop option. |
| VLC Video source | A playlist of multiple files | Add the files, enable Loop Playlist, and optionally enable Shuffle Playlist if you do not need a fixed order. VLC must be installed. |
These source types are separate: a single-file Media Source is not a multi-file playlist source. In OBS, add the appropriate source to the scene, select the file or files, and confirm playback in the preview before connecting to YouTube.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one you have already set up.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, use the YouTube stream URL and key in the fields OBS provides.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as “your stream’s password and address.” If someone else obtains it, reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
- Prefer RTMPS when your encoder setup supports it. YouTube recommends the encrypted transport; RTMP is a compatibility option when the encoder or configuration calls for it.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check the title, visibility, and other stream details there before you start the public broadcast.
Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
Match the outgoing stream to the source footage rather than upscaling it. YouTube detects resolution and frame rate by default and transcodes a live stream into different output formats for viewers, but the encoder still needs to deliver a stable feed. In OBS, use Settings > Video for the output resolution and frame rate, then configure the encoder under Settings > Output with the appropriate streaming output mode.

Recommended H.264 SDR examples
| Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264, not minimums or guarantees of a reliable stream. The current YouTube encoder settings table gives different ranges for H.265 and AV1, so use the row for the codec you actually send. Test the upload connection and leave capacity for normal variation; do not select a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.
Encoder settings to check
- Rate control: CBR for H.264 recommendations.
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps; use a rate appropriate to the source.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed formats. Check that audio is present and at a sensible level, even if the nature footage is mostly ambient.
- HDR: use ordinary SDR for a standard workflow unless both the source and encoding workflow specifically require HDR.
- Transport: use RTMPS where supported.
Use YouTube’s current encoder table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination rather than carrying a bitrate from a different setup. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health.

Preflight and monitor the live broadcast
- Test with representative footage, including the most detailed movement and the audio you expect to broadcast.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview before publishing. Confirm that the playlist advances as intended, the image is not cropped or distorted, and audio is audible.
- Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and watch for buffering, dropped frames, audio problems, or a source that has stopped advancing.
- Once live, keep an eye on both OBS and the Live Control Room. The setup can be tested and monitored, but the guidance does not guarantee an unattended stream will remain online.
Plan around YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. For a stream longer than 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all; do not rely on an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce one complete replay. If keeping a copy matters, record locally as a backup and consider ending and restarting broadcasts in segments under 12 hours. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.
DVR can let viewers pause and rewind a live stream, but YouTube warns that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If rewind matters to viewers, avoid promising a specific rewind window for a very long broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No feed appears in Live Control Room | Wrong server URL or stream key, or OBS is not sending. | Confirm OBS is streaming, recheck the URL and key against the selected YouTube stream, and replace a compromised key. |
| The playlist stops at the end | Looping is not enabled or the wrong source type is in use. | For VLC Video, enable Loop Playlist; for a single Media Source file, enable Loop on that source. |
| VLC Video source is unavailable or files will not play | VLC is not installed, or the playlist paths/files are unavailable. | Install VLC, then check that each selected file is accessible to OBS. |
| Buffering or dropped frames | The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. | Test upload capacity, reduce bitrate or output demands, and check stream health again. |
| Video looks soft or differs from the source | Output resolution, frame rate, or codec settings may not suit the footage. | Match the source where practical and verify the relevant YouTube encoder table row. |
| Replay is missing or incomplete | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic archive window. | Do not count on an archive for streams over 12 hours; record locally and use shorter segments if a YouTube replay is important. |
