OBS’s automatic reconnect can recover a dropped encoder connection while OBS is still running, but it cannot reopen OBS after the application crashes. For unattended recovery, configure OBS reconnect, arrange for your operating system or a process supervisor to relaunch OBS, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. Then test each layer separately.
Identify what stopped
A stream that ends can involve three separate failures: the connection from OBS to YouTube, the OBS application process, or YouTube’s broadcast state. The fix depends on which one failed.
| Failure | What to use | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary connection loss while OBS remains open | OBS automatic reconnect | It does not relaunch OBS after the process exits. |
| OBS crashes or exits | An operating-system automation or process supervisor configured to relaunch OBS | It does not by itself resolve a rejected stream key or YouTube broadcast setting. |
| YouTube broadcast does not start or stop as expected | Review the selected stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room | These settings do not restart the OBS application. |
Automatic recovery is reliable only when the relevant layer is covered. OBS’s reconnect feature operates within a running OBS instance; after OBS exits, another mechanism must launch it again. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Set up OBS to reconnect after a connection drop
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Choose a retry count and delay appropriate for your connection and use case.
- Apply the settings and test them before relying on them during a live broadcast.
There is no universal retry count or delay prescribed in the official OBS overview; choose values for your situation and verify the result. This setting helps when OBS is still running but its stream output loses connection. It does not restart a crashed application. OBS Studio Overview Guide

Arrange for OBS to launch again after a crash
Use an operating-system automation or process supervisor that can detect when OBS exits and launch it again. The exact setup varies by operating system and version; the instructions here do not specify a universal recipe for Windows, macOS, or Linux. Use guidance for your system, and test the launch before depending on it unattended.
Decide whether relaunch should start streaming
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. Decide whether a recovery should merely open OBS or also immediately attempt to start streaming, and configure the automation accordingly. An automatic streaming attempt can fail if the scene, destination, or current stream key is not ready, so verify the behavior in a controlled test. OBS Launch Parameters

Set the working directory on Windows
For scheduled or automated launches on Windows, the OBS launch guide says to set Start in to the directory containing obs64.exe. Check that the automation launches the intended OBS installation and that its required configuration is available. OBS Launch Parameters
Guard against a crash loop
A supervisor may repeatedly reopen OBS if a broken configuration or another persistent problem makes it exit each time. Configure a reasonable restart policy and make sure repeated failures remain visible to an operator; do not treat repeated launches as proof that the stream is live.

Check YouTube’s broadcast settings and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the broadcast you intend to use.
- Review its auto-start and auto-stop settings. When enabled, these settings allow streaming to be started or stopped from the encoder. Reused stream settings copy these selections, so inspect them on broadcasts made from a previous configuration too. Manage live stream settings
- If OBS relaunches but YouTube does not receive the stream, verify OBS’s destination and stream key against the current key in Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for third-party encoders with a startup error directs users to copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
Test recovery before an unattended stream
Test in a controlled situation rather than waiting for a production failure. Confirm each recovery layer independently:
- Connection recovery: while OBS remains open, verify that a brief connection interruption triggers the configured reconnect behavior.
- Process recovery: close OBS in a controlled test and confirm that the automation relaunches the correct installation. If configured, confirm separately whether
--startstreamingstarts the output. - YouTube behavior: confirm that the broadcast starts or stops as expected when the encoder feed disappears and returns, given the selected auto-start and auto-stop settings.
- Feed health: check the Live Control Room health indicator and timestamped messages. YouTube describes red errors as critical; they can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems. Live streaming error messages
OBS recommends testing settings before streaming, and YouTube’s health and error displays help establish whether it is receiving a valid feed. A reopened OBS window alone does not confirm a successful recovery. OBS Studio Overview Guide

Troubleshoot a failed automatic restart
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS remains open, but the stream output does not recover after a connection drop | Connection | Confirm automatic reconnect is enabled under Settings → Advanced, then review its retry settings and the connection. |
| OBS closes and stays closed | Process | Check that the supervisor or scheduled automation is configured to detect the OBS process exit and launch the intended executable. |
| OBS opens again, but YouTube does not start receiving the stream | Startup or broadcast | Check whether the launch includes --startstreaming if that is intended; verify the selected broadcast, destination, and current stream key. |
| YouTube does not start or stop when the encoder feed appears or disappears | Broadcast state | Review auto-start and auto-stop in Live Control Room, including on broadcasts that reuse stream settings. |
| Live Control Room shows a red error or unhealthy feed | Incoming feed | Read the timestamped error and address the reported issue; red errors are critical and may inhibit startup or affect viewers. |
| OBS repeatedly opens and exits | Process or configuration | Investigate the underlying exit cause and limit repeated relaunches so a persistent failure does not become an unnoticed loop. |
