If OBS stays on “Connecting,” don’t assume the stream key is the problem. First check the stream’s status in YouTube Live Control Room, then verify OBS’s YouTube service, server and key, confirm the encoder is sending a healthy feed, and test the outbound connection. The message alone does not identify the cause, so work through these checks in order and change one thing at a time.
1. Check YouTube Live Control Room for the actual error
Open YouTube Studio → Go Live and select the stream you are trying to start. Read the stream status and any error message before changing OBS settings. YouTube’s status messages can include specific instructions, making them a better starting point than guessing from OBS’s “Connecting” label. YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics and status explains where to find them.
- If YouTube reports a key, stream or encoder startup error, follow the instruction shown for that stream.
- If no feed appears, continue through the OBS connection and encoder checks below.
- If the feed reaches YouTube but viewers later report buffering, use the dropped-frame and viewer-buffering checks in the network section; those are not the same symptom as OBS failing to connect.
2. Verify OBS’s YouTube connection settings
In OBS, open Settings → Stream and check that the service is set to YouTube and the server or stream URL matches the configuration you intend to use. Confirm that the stream key is the one associated with the selected YouTube stream. A key tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it; YouTube describes it as password-like, so do not post it, send it to someone helping in public, or include it in screenshots.
If you reset the key in YouTube, replace the old value in OBS with the new one. YouTube’s instruction to retrieve a key and update an encoder applies to certain third-party encoder startup errors; resetting the key is not a universal fix. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance and, for applicable encoder startup errors, YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the protocol supported by the selected YouTube and OBS configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, in its encoder settings guidance; switching protocols without checking compatibility is not a guaranteed repair.
3. Check whether OBS is producing a healthy feed
Before treating this as a network failure, make sure OBS itself is ready to send video and audio.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check that the intended scene and sources appear in the OBS preview and that audio meters respond if the stream needs sound.
- Confirm the selected encoder is available and that streaming has actually started in OBS. Inspect OBS’s status and log for connection or encoder errors.
- Check whether the computer is under heavy CPU load. If the output looks or sounds abnormal, YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and considering CPU load or a local recording as diagnostic clues.
- Make sure OBS is current. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting recommends using an up-to-date encoder.
If the local preview is blank, frozen or missing audio, fix the scene, source or encoder issue first. A healthy local preview does not prove YouTube is receiving the feed, but it helps separate a production problem from a connection problem.
4. Test whether the internet connection can sustain the stream
Run an upload-speed test, then compare the connection’s stable upload capacity with the bitrate you selected and YouTube’s current recommendations for your codec, resolution and frame rate. A brief speed-test peak is not proof that the connection can hold that rate throughout a live stream. YouTube recommends choosing quality appropriate to the connection and testing before going live; consult its current encoder settings and bitrate table for the mode you use.

If upload capacity is insufficient or varies, lower the OBS bitrate and test again. OBS suggests using about 75% of total upload speed only as a starting point for bitrate selection—not as a guarantee or a universal rule. Its connection troubleshooting guide also recommends matching bitrate to stable capacity. A lower bitrate can reduce dropped frames but also reduces video quality.
5. Isolate network interference without making risky changes
- Try a wired connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, test over Ethernet to see whether wireless instability is involved. This isolates the connection path; it will not fix an incorrect stream key or OBS service setting.
- Temporarily test without a VPN or network-prioritization utility. If disabling one changes the result, restore it only after you have identified the relevant setting or made an appropriate exception.
- Check firewall or antivirus interference carefully. If a controlled test shows security software is blocking OBS, add an OBS exception and turn protection back on. Do not leave security protection disabled as a permanent fix.
- Try another available ingest server. OBS’s connection guide suggests testing another server if one is available. Change only this setting, then see whether the connection behavior changes.
These are diagnostic tests, not proof that your router or other hardware is faulty. If the connection remains unstable across tests, contact your ISP with the results before replacing equipment. OBS also notes that persistent network trouble may require ISP help.

6. Use OBS network options only as targeted tests
OBS’s network troubleshooting guide documents Windows-only options that may help some users with disconnections. They are tests for particular network behavior, not standard settings to change blindly.
- Bind to IP: leave it at Default unless you have a specific reason to test another interface.
- IP family: test IPv4-only if appropriate. If it does not help, restore IPv4/IPv6 rather than keeping a change without evidence.
- Network optimizations and TCP pacing: OBS documents these as Windows-only options that some users report can help with disconnections. If you test them, change one at a time and compare the result.
- Dynamic bitrate: treat this as a fallback for reducing dropped frames, not a root-cause repair. OBS warns that it can lower video quality.

7. Tell a connection failure from viewer buffering
“OBS is connecting” means the encoder is trying to establish a feed. Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point toward trouble between the computer and the remote ingest server. Viewer buffering can happen even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames, so first establish whether YouTube has received a healthy stream and whether OBS reports dropped frames. OBS separates these problems in its connection guide and viewer-buffering guide.
8. Test before retrying the live event
After correcting the setting or connection issue, test the stream before going live to your audience. Watch both OBS’s output status and the YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health messages. If the failure returns, note the exact YouTube status, relevant OBS log entry, connection type, and settings you changed; those details make the next diagnosis more useful than repeatedly resetting keys or changing several settings at once.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock, rather than troubleshoot a camera or interactive OBS production, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
