YouTube Live Streaming at 1440p vs. 1080p: Bitrate and Quality

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For YouTube live ingest, 1440p needs more bitrate than 1080p at the same frame rate and codec. At 60 fps, YouTube recommends 24 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1440p, compared with 12 Mbps at 1080p; with H.264, the recommendations are 34 Mbps and 17 Mbps. Choose the higher resolution only if your encoder and upload connection can sustain its settings reliably. These figures concern a live encoder sending a stream to YouTube, not a video file upload.

Recommended live bitrates: 1440p vs. 1080p

YouTube’s live-encoder guidance gives different recommended bitrates according to resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec. The figures below are recommendations, not guarantees of a particular visible quality.

Live ingest setting AV1 or H.265 recommendation H.264 recommendation
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps

Source: YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, checked October 3, 2026. YouTube’s table also lists minimums, which are below its recommendations: for AV1/H.265 and H.264 respectively, 1440p60 is 6 and 8 Mbps; 1440p30 is 5 and 7 Mbps; 1080p60 is 4 and 6 Mbps; and 1080p30 is 4 and 5 Mbps. A minimum is not the target recommendation.

Does 1440p look better than 1080p on a live stream?

1440p carries more image detail than 1080p when the source, encoding, playback conditions, and display make that detail visible. It is not an automatic quality upgrade in every situation: a clean 1080p stream can look better than a 1440p stream whose connection is unstable or whose source has little detail. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions, so your ingest resolution is not necessarily the resolution every viewer receives.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

At the same codec and frame rate, YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 1440p is higher than for 1080p. The extra bandwidth is most defensible when your content benefits from fine detail—such as fast-moving games with detailed scenery or small on-screen text—and you can maintain the required upload reliably. If a dependable stream matters more than additional detail, 1080p is a sensible choice.

Choose settings by codec, frame rate, and connection

Check the encoder’s actual codec

Do not select a bitrate based on resolution alone. YouTube’s recommendations differ by codec: at the same resolution and frame rate, its H.264 figure is higher than the AV1/H.265 figure in the table. Check which codec your encoder is actually sending before applying a number; an encoder option or preset name does not by itself establish the outgoing codec.

Choose 30 or 60 fps for the content

Sixty frames per second can make motion appear smoother, which is useful for many games, but it calls for a higher recommended bitrate than 30 fps at the same resolution and codec. Compare like with like: 1440p60 versus 1080p60, for example, rather than attributing the difference between 1440p60 and 1080p30 to resolution alone.

Use a bitrate your upload can hold steadily

YouTube advises choosing a quality that results in a reliable stream for your internet connection and recommends running an upload speed test. Its cited guidance does not specify one universal upload-speed safety margin for every connection. A speed test is a useful check, but it cannot promise that a connection will remain steady during a broadcast. If the stream health indicator shows problems or viewers report interruptions, lower the bitrate or use a lower-resolution or frame-rate combination your connection can sustain.

Configure the live encoder before going live

YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For SDR, its advanced guidance specifies square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709. It identifies H.265 as the recommended HDR codec and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in these settings. Check the current YouTube encoder page when configuring a particular software version, as live settings can change.

  1. Set the output resolution and frame rate. Choose 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440 and 30 or 60 fps based on your source and connection.
  2. Set the outgoing codec and bitrate. Confirm the encoder’s actual codec, then use the corresponding YouTube recommendation in the table rather than an upload-encoding figure.
  3. Set rate control and keyframes. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  4. Check transport and picture format. Prefer RTMPS. For SDR, use progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709 as described in YouTube’s advanced guidance.
  5. Test the full setup. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health and messages during the event.

Live bitrate is not upload bitrate

Do not use YouTube’s upload bitrate table to configure live ingest. Upload guidance lists 1440p at 16 Mbps for standard frame rates and 24 Mbps for high frame rates, and 1080p at 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively. Those figures apply to encoding video files for upload; live ingest has its own codec- and frame-rate-specific recommendations above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for that separate use case.

Latency and the viewer experience

Resolution and bitrate are not the only choices that affect a live broadcast. YouTube explains that lower latency may increase playback buffering. If real-time interaction with chat or a live audience is important, weigh the benefit of lower latency against the possibility of more buffering. Review YouTube’s live stream settings guidance for the available latency options and tradeoffs.
