An Indian school can livestream on YouTube if its channel is verified, has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days, and an adult aged 16 or older starts the broadcast. Computer webcam and encoder streams do not have the mobile app’s 50-subscriber threshold in YouTube’s cited guidance. School-managed accounts, students under 16, and the stream’s audience setting need separate checks.
Eligibility checklist for an Indian school channel
- Verify the channel. YouTube requires a verified channel to livestream. Verification uses a phone number for a text or voice-call code; YouTube says a phone number can be linked to no more than two channels per year. See YouTube’s account verification instructions.
- Check live-stream standing. The channel must have had no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Policy or copyright issues can lead to restrictions. Do not switch to another channel to evade one: YouTube treats that as circumvention. Check YouTube’s live-stream restriction guidance.
- Ensure an eligible adult starts the stream. Since July 22, 2025, YouTube requires the person who starts a livestream to be at least 16. If students under 16 participate through an adult-owned account, the adult must be visibly present; a delegated adult starting from Live Control Room must also be visibly present and engage in the broadcast.
- Choose the streaming method. Mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streams have different requirements. In particular, the 50-subscriber minimum applies to mobile livestreaming, not to computer webcam or encoder streaming under the cited official guidance.
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube may take up to 24 hours to activate a channel’s first livestream after the feature is enabled. Avoid leaving this check until event day.
- Check the school account’s controls. If the channel uses Google Workspace for Education, ask the administrator whether the account is marked under 18 and whether YouTube access is enabled. Those settings may prevent channel creation or livestreaming.
Mobile and computer requirements are different

YouTube lists India as a location where Playables livestreaming is available. That feature-specific note does not waive the ordinary mobile livestream requirements.
School-managed accounts and students
Google’s general guidance gives 13 as the minimum age to manage an account in countries without a different listed minimum, but cautions that this may not apply to Workspace for Education. YouTube separately explains that an administrator can mark an Education account as under 18 and restrict YouTube features, including channel creation and livestreaming. A student’s age alone therefore does not establish whether a school-issued account can operate a channel. Confirm the actual account type and administrator settings with the school’s Google Workspace administrator. See Google’s age requirements and YouTube’s guidance on school accounts.
For a school-owned channel featuring students under 16, have an adult operate the broadcast from an adult-owned account and remain visibly present and meaningfully involved. YouTube warns that livestreams featuring under-16s without a visibly present adult may have chat disabled or be removed, and the channel may lose live access. Do not reveal students’ personal details or identifying location information. Consult YouTube’s child safety policy.

Choose the correct audience setting
Set the audience for each livestream in Live Control Room according to the content’s intended audience. Being a school does not by itself determine whether a particular stream is Made for Kids. If a stream is designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables or limits features including live chat, comments, notifications, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and personalized advertising. These restrictions affect interaction and monetization; they are separate from the basic eligibility rules for starting a livestream. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
Troubleshoot a school channel that cannot go live
- The channel has no live option: Confirm that the channel is verified and live streaming has been enabled. For a first livestream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- YouTube reports a restriction: Check the channel’s live-stream standing for the prior 90 days and resolve the underlying issue through YouTube’s processes. Do not try to bypass it with another channel.
- A student is trying to start the stream: The starter must be at least 16. Arrange for an eligible adult to start it; when under-16s appear, the adult must be visibly present and participate.
- The mobile app blocks the stream: Check the mobile-specific threshold of 50 subscribers, verification, feature activation, and device requirements. A computer webcam or encoder method has different subscriber requirements.
- The school Google account cannot access YouTube features: Ask the Workspace for Education administrator whether the account is marked under 18 and whether YouTube access is enabled. General Google Account age guidance does not settle this school-account setting.
- A small mobile audience or private archive is unexpected: Below 1,000 subscribers, YouTube may limit the mobile stream audience and make its archive private by default; reaching 1,000 may not remove limits immediately.
