YouTube’s 12-hour guidance is about archiving and rewind, not a confirmed cutoff for a live broadcast. YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Its official help pages reviewed here do not establish that YouTube automatically ends a scheduled stream at 12 hours or state a maximum live duration. If the full recording matters, make a separate local recording.
Does YouTube stop a live stream after 12 hours?
Not according to the official guidance cited here. YouTube documents what can happen to a stream’s archive and DVR playback at the 12-hour threshold; it does not say in these pages that a broadcast is forcibly stopped after 12 hours. Nor do these pages establish a maximum duration for which a stream can stay live. Do not treat 12 hours as a verified hard cutoff for broadcasting.
That distinction matters for a long scheduled event: the live feed may still be running while its recording or rewind options are incomplete or unavailable. Broadcast continuity and retention are separate concerns.
Will YouTube save a stream that runs longer than 12 hours?
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams that are less than 12 hours long. It also warns that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. This is a risk, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be archived or that every longer stream will be lost. The guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. If you need a complete copy, record locally as well as streaming. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup, but a local recording is not failproof: the encoder, recording software, storage, power, or network can still fail. Check during the event that the recording file is growing, and choose enough storage for your encoder’s settings and planned duration; YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a universal format or capacity.
Can viewers rewind a 24-hour YouTube live stream?
Do not assume they can rewind the entire broadcast. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers may not be able to seek back through the full event. How to prepare a long scheduled stream
YouTube recommends preparing the encoder well before the event rather than waiting until the advertised start time. Its streaming tips advise setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain scheduling streams in Live Control Room. Confirm the event’s start time and stream settings before sharing the link with viewers. YouTube Help: Stream using an encoder
- Set up and test the encoder early. Allow at least two hours before the event for setup, then start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, as YouTube recommends.
- Check the preview before going live. Confirm the incoming picture and audio in YouTube’s preview. Monitor stream quality during the broadcast rather than assuming a successful start means it will remain healthy.
- Start a separate local recording. Confirm the recording is being written and that its file continues to grow. Check available storage against the planned duration and the encoder’s recording settings.
- Plan for the archive and rewind limits. If the stream will exceed 12 hours, tell viewers who may need to catch up that DVR rewind could be limited or unavailable, and do not promise a complete YouTube archive.
If the recording or rewind is missing
- The YouTube archive is absent or incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use the local recording if it completed; do not assume the live broadcast itself was stopped.
- Viewers cannot rewind to the beginning: DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. The limit can also be lower on Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions.
- The local recording is not growing: Check that recording is enabled in the encoder, that the selected destination is writable, and that storage remains available. These checks address local recording failures; they do not change YouTube’s archive behavior.
- The stream preview or quality has a problem: Check the encoder connection and YouTube’s stream-quality monitoring, then follow the encoder’s own diagnostics. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify one universal bitrate or resolution for every encoder and stream.
