Neither platform is better for every creator. Choose YouTube Live if your plan depends on encoder-based production, searchable video, horizontal and vertical formats, or YouTube’s live features. Consider Facebook Live if the people you want to reach are already active in your Facebook groups, profile, or Page. Your audience and how you plan to produce and reuse streams matter more than any blanket promise of reach.
How to choose between YouTube Live and Facebook Live
Start with the viewers you want to join, then consider what you need to make and do with the stream. A platform’s audience statistic or feature list cannot predict the results for an individual channel.
- Where are your intended viewers? If your community already connects through Facebook, test Facebook Live with that audience. If your viewers look for video on YouTube or you want streams alongside other YouTube videos, YouTube Live may fit better.
- How will you produce the stream? YouTube documents several workflows, including encoders for gameplay and layered production. Compare those options with the current Facebook Live tools available to your account.
- What format suits the content? YouTube offers horizontal and vertical live experiences, but some features differ between them.
- How will you earn from it? Check the monetization features and eligibility actually available to your account and country before choosing based on potential revenue.
- Do you need to keep the replay? Review each platform’s current storage and download rules, and save important recordings yourself.
Audience and discovery: your community matters more than a reach promise
YouTube reported that “On average, over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025 alone,” in a September 16, 2025 product announcement by Aaron Filner, Senior Director of Product Management. That figure describes YouTube viewing across the platform; it is not a comparison with Facebook and does not predict how many people will find any one stream. Read YouTube’s announcement.
There is no directly comparable Facebook Live audience statistic here that establishes which platform delivers more reach. Treat audience access as a practical question: where can the people you want to watch readily see and join your broadcast? Existing connections on a Facebook Page or group are a reason to consider Facebook Live, not evidence that it will automatically distribute your stream more widely.

Production methods and formats
YouTube’s documented streaming workflows
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and game-console methods. Its guide describes encoders as useful for gameplay and productions using overlays or equipment such as microphones, cameras, and preamps. Verify the current requirements and steps in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.
YouTube’s live setup requirements include channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; creators must also be at least 16 to livestream. These are platform requirements, not a guarantee that every format or feature will be available to every account.

Horizontal and vertical YouTube streams
YouTube describes horizontal video as 16:9 and vertical video as 9:16. For streams launched from Live Control Room, the guide says delivery in both formats can be enabled by default; the vertical version is center-cropped unless you adjust the layout. Vertical streams may appear in the Shorts feed, which can suit mobile-first viewing.
The format choice affects features. YouTube’s current feature table lists clickable links in chat and the channel description, live pre-roll and mid-roll ads, 4K bitrate broadcasts, Premieres, and Live Redirect for horizontal streams, but does not list those features for the vertical live feed. Memberships are listed for both. Availability can depend on workflow and eligibility, so consult the current YouTube guide before planning around a particular feature.

For Facebook Live, the evidence available here does not establish comparable current technical specifications or format-by-format feature support. Check Meta’s current instructions for the tools available to your account rather than assuming its workflow matches YouTube’s.
Monetization: compare eligibility, not hypothetical earnings
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as live-stream earning options. Access depends on eligibility. Eligible monetized streams can receive pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads, but YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Read YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance and check your account’s status before treating any feature as available.

Meta announced a Facebook Live replay-storage policy update on February 18, 2025. It also describes downloading an individual live video from a profile, Page, or Meta Business Suite. Because retention rules can change, verify the current policy before relying on Facebook to keep an archive, and download recordings you need to retain. See Meta’s storage-policy announcement.

A practical verdict for gaming streams
- Choose YouTube Live when you want documented encoder workflows for gameplay, need to plan around YouTube’s horizontal and vertical live formats, or want to use its live-native creator features if eligible.
- Consider Facebook Live when your intended viewers are already connected through Facebook groups, profiles, or Pages and that is the community you want to serve.
- Before committing, test with the audience you actually have, confirm the specific production features and monetization tools on your account, and decide how you will keep replays.
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded gameplay recordings around the clock rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for that specific use.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos, the setup is three steps:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.
Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The video streams as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; one free day is available per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera broadcast. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
