How the platforms fit different gaming channels
YouTube Live: live shows connected to a video channel
YouTube is a natural choice when you want live broadcasts and other channel videos in the same YouTube presence. It supports horizontal and vertical live formats, but they are not interchangeable: YouTube documents different features for each. Vertical live feeds can surface in the Shorts feed, while horizontal streams include features such as clickable links in chat and description, Premieres and Live Redirect. Check the current feature table before choosing a format, especially if your show depends on a particular tool.
YouTube also documents several routes to go live: from a mobile device, webcam, encoder or console. A webcam is one option for computer streaming, not a prerequisite for using the platform. Your choice of setup should follow the game and show: a console route may suit a direct gameplay broadcast, while an encoder can suit a more involved production. The reviewed platform pages do not establish that you need to buy a particular webcam, microphone or encoder.

Twitch: a channel organized around live broadcasts
Twitch’s documented creator features emphasize its live-channel ecosystem, including Affiliate monetization tools and channel settings for subscriptions and cheering. That can make Twitch a better starting point if your show is designed around regular live sessions and you want to build around Twitch’s own interaction and monetization options.
The choice should still reflect your audience’s habits. If the people you want to reach already follow you on one platform, that is more useful evidence for your decision than a generic promise about which service is easier to grow on. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal audience or growth advantage for either platform.

Compare interaction and monetization realistically
YouTube: several features, with separate eligibility rules
YouTube documents live ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, channel memberships and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to applicable eligibility, regional availability, policies and terms. Its feature documentation also says live ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Treat the feature list as possible ways to monetize an eligible channel—not as a forecast of how much a stream will earn. YouTube describes live chat as available on YouTube watch pages; review its current feature details at Learn about live streams and Monetize your live stream.
YouTube Help’s current published eligibility page, retrieved in 2026, lists a lower access tier for features including memberships and fan funding: 500 subscribers, at least three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the previous 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. The higher threshold listed for Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads and YouTube Premium is 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Feature-specific requirements, country availability, policy review and acceptance of relevant terms or modules still apply. These are not interchangeable thresholds: check the eligibility for the specific feature you want.

Twitch: Affiliate is a milestone, not a promise of income
Twitch’s current Affiliate FAQ, retrieved in 2026, lists four achievements to complete within the same 30-day period: 25 followers, four streamed hours, streaming on four different days, and an average of three concurrent viewers on four days. The viewer measure is average concurrent viewers, not total views. Two-factor authentication is required for onboarding. Affiliate status can unlock subscriptions, Bits and ad revenue, subject to onboarding and terms; it does not mean you have qualified as a Twitch Partner. Twitch Partner documentation says participating Partners receive one cent per Bit used to Cheer, and that subscription revenue may vary by the subscriber’s country. That figure applies to the documented Partner arrangement; it is not an earnings estimate for a prospective Affiliate or a comparison of likely income across platforms. Plan for replays before you go live
If you want broadcasts to become an archive, verify the platform’s current storage settings and decide how you will preserve important sessions. Twitch requires VOD storage to be enabled and lists retention periods by account status: 7 days for other broadcasters, 14 days for Affiliates, and 60 days for Partners, Prime and Turbo users. Those are the periods listed on Twitch’s VOD help page, not a guarantee that a particular creator’s settings are enabled.
YouTube’s reviewed live-stream documentation says creators may post a replay or highlights, but it does not give a directly comparable universal retention period. If a stream matters as a long-term record, do not assume that an on-platform replay alone is your archive plan; confirm the current YouTube settings and export or backup workflow you intend to use.

Make the choice with this checklist
- Start with audience: Which service do your intended viewers already use to follow your gaming content?
- Match the show format: If vertical live placement in the Shorts feed or YouTube’s horizontal-stream features matter, check which format supports the tools you need.
- Assess monetization eligibility: Compare your channel’s current status with the specific YouTube feature requirements or Twitch Affiliate achievements—not with an assumed revenue outcome.
- Decide how viewers should participate: Consider whether YouTube’s chat, Super Chat, Super Stickers and memberships or Twitch’s subscriptions and Bits better match the interaction you plan to offer.
- Set an archive policy: Know whether you need a replay, highlights or a separate long-term copy, and check the relevant platform settings before the stream.
- Try a representative broadcast: Test your actual game, audio, format and moderation workflow before committing your schedule to one platform.
