YouTube Livestream Copyright Claim on OBS Media Source: How to Find the Video File

A Content ID claim identifies matched content and a segment, not the OBS source path. Use the timestamp to check Media Sources in the scene collection used for the archived livestream.

To identify which OBS video may have triggered a copyright claim, note the claimed content and timestamp in YouTube Studio, then check the Media Sources in the OBS scene collection used for that livestream. Open each likely source’s properties and inspect its Local File path. YouTube identifies the claimed content and segment; it does not reveal the name or local path of the OBS source, so you may need to compare several files against your stream timeline.

What the claim tells you—and what it does not

YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content, but a Content ID claim on an archived livestream is made after the stream ends. YouTube Help puts it this way: “Content ID claims are only made after you complete your live streams, if you decide to archive the video.” YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance distinguishes this later claim from a live interruption.

The claim details can identify the claimant, the content matched, and a segment or time range. Different parts of one video can have different claimants, and actions can vary by territory. A Content ID claim is not, by itself, a takedown or copyright strike. The claim page does not identify the OBS scene source or disclose the file path on your computer.

Find the likely file in OBS

  1. Locate the archived stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio → Content, filter by Claims, and select the affected archived livestream. Open its claim details.
  2. Record the useful clues. Note the claimant, the content identified, any claimed time range, and the action applied. Use the time range to find what was playing at that point in the stream; do not treat an unfamiliar claimant as proof that the claim is invalid.
  3. Identify the OBS scene collection used for that broadcast. In OBS, open the relevant scene collection and find the scene or scenes that were active during the claimed segment. Scene collections contain scenes and sources; an OBS profile stores output settings and is a separate concept.
  4. Inspect likely Media Sources. Select a source in the scene’s Sources list, open its properties, and check Local File. OBS describes the feature simply: “Media source adds different types of media files to your scenes.” OBS Project: Media Sources
  5. Compare the file with the claim and timeline. Open or otherwise verify each candidate file and compare its actual content with the material named in the claim. Record the path and check other likely scenes if the same asset appears more than once.

When one file is not an obvious match

A timestamp narrows the search; it does not always identify a unique source. Several sources may overlap, a playlist may have been running, or the same asset may appear in multiple scenes. Compare the claim segment with the livestream timeline and your scene switching and media playback records, if available. OBS and YouTube’s public documentation cannot establish which local source was audible or visible at an exact moment in your particular setup.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the scene collection was moved between computers, also check whether its file paths still point to the intended media. OBS notes that media files do not become portable simply because OBS is in portable mode; a relocated collection may need paths that work on both devices or manual changes to its JSON. OBS Project: Portable Mode

Choose what to do with the claim

  • Leave it in place if you do not have a reason to challenge it or are still checking the facts.
  • Remove or replace the material if the claim matches the media and you want to change the archived video. If you replace it, use material you have permission to use.
  • Dispute only with a valid basis. YouTube lists reasons such as having the necessary rights, a copyright exception, or misidentification. Giving credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize does not alone justify a dispute. YouTube also says it does not adjudicate ownership disputes. Read YouTube’s dispute guidance before submitting one.

For an initial dispute, YouTube says the claimant has 30 days to respond. An appeal gives the claimant seven days to respond, but it carries more risk: a rejected appeal may be followed by a valid removal request and a strike. Do not treat an appeal as routine follow-up; review YouTube’s dispute process and appeal guidance before choosing it.

If revenue from the archive matters

YouTube says a dispute filed within five days holds revenue from the claim date; one filed later holds revenue from the dispute date. Held revenue is allocated after resolution, and revenue data does not appear in YouTube Analytics while a claim is actively disputed or appealed. Check YouTube’s guidance on revenue during Content ID disputes for the applicable process.
