To understand how a YouTube livestream performed, track four things together: audience size, viewing depth, discovery, and participation. Start with average concurrent viewers to gauge the typical simultaneous audience; use peak concurrent viewers for the highest point. Then add views and watch time, discovery metrics such as impressions and click-through rate when available, and chat, likes, and subscribers gained. YouTube does not publish a universal “good” benchmark for these numbers, so compare similar streams using the same reporting view and date range.
Which YouTube livestream metrics matter?
Each metric answers a different question. A useful scorecard combines measures rather than treating one number as a verdict.
Audience size: average and peak concurrent viewers
- Average concurrent viewers is the average number of people watching simultaneously during the stream. It is the steadier measure of the typical live audience.
- Peak concurrent viewers is the highest simultaneous audience reached. It identifies the high point, but a short spike can make it much larger than the stream’s typical audience.
- Concurrent viewers at a particular moment tells you how many people are watching together then. It is not the same as total views.
YouTube Help defines average concurrent viewers as “The average number of viewers who were simultaneously watching your stream at any one time.” Google’s Analytics API also defines average and peak concurrent viewers; with a livestream-position breakdown, the figures can apply to a segment rather than the entire event. Reach: views, impressions, and click-through rate
- Views count times the livestream was viewed while live in the Live Control Room definitions. A view is not a person watching simultaneously, and it does not say how long that viewer stayed.
- Impressions describe thumbnail exposure in eligible YouTube surfaces.
- Impressions click-through rate indicates how often those impressions led to a view.
Think of these as a discovery funnel: impressions are exposure, click-through rate is response to that exposure, and views are resulting playbacks. Reach metrics can help you assess discovery and packaging; they do not establish whether the live session held attention. The visible reports vary by Analytics view. Viewing depth: watch time and average view duration
- Total watch time is the time the event was played across views.
- Average view duration is the estimated average number of minutes watched per view.
- Audience retention can help you locate where attention changed during the stream. A final average alone cannot explain why viewers left or stayed.
Use these alongside views. A stream can attract many playbacks but have a short average view duration; the figures describe different aspects of viewing.
Participation and channel outcomes
- Chat rate is the number of messages sent in live chat per minute. YouTube Help defines it that way. Chat messages are also available in post-stream Analytics.
- Likes and reactions show audience response; likes remain with the VOD archive.
- Subscribers gained records a channel outcome during the stream.
- Reminders set can help assess scheduled streams. The video-level Analytics count for a selected date range excludes reminders that were later removed.
Chat is an interaction measure, not an audience count. Read it alongside concurrent viewers and the stream’s format; a low message count by itself does not establish that a stream failed.

Where to find the numbers, and when they are ready
During the stream: Live Control Room
Open the broadcast dashboard in YouTube Live Control Room to check stream status and health alongside real-time readings. YouTube lists concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration among the available live metrics.
After the stream: snapshot and Analytics
Live Control Room provides a quick post-stream snapshot. YouTube says livestream reporting is available at video level in Analytics within minutes after the stream ends, and the data can be downloaded as a CSV. YouTube Studio also offers video-level and channel-level concurrent-viewer measures and retention reporting.

Keep the scope straight: a video-level average or peak is for one broadcast, while channel-level measures summarize streams over a selected period. The snapshot and later Analytics report may not match. YouTube says Analytics is based on the video ID and that its data is processed and despammed; it measures different information from Live Control Room. Record which surface and date range you used rather than combining readings as if they were one unchanged counter. YouTube Help explains the reporting differences and available metrics.
Horizontal and vertical streams together
If you broadcast horizontal and vertical formats simultaneously, Live Control Room combines their metrics. To inspect vertical-feed-only performance, wait at least 24 hours, then open the ended stream in Studio and select Analytics / Advanced mode. Set Playback location as the breakdown, choose a period longer than the initial 24 hours, and select Vertical live feed. The first-day timing caveat matters: the combined Live Control Room figures are not a vertical-only result.

How to compare livestreams fairly
- Match the reporting basis. Use the same surface—Live Control Room or processed Analytics—the same scope (video-level or channel-level), and the same date range.
- Compare like with like. Keep format, duration, topic, and promotion as similar as practical. Label vertical or other format differences instead of treating them as equivalent broadcasts.
- Use average concurrents for typical audience and peak concurrents for the high point. Do not rank streams on peak alone.
- Add depth and reach. Compare views with total watch time and average view duration; use impressions and click-through rate when the relevant Live Analytics view shows them.
- Read participation in context. Consider chat rate or message count alongside audience size, likes or reactions, and subscribers gained.
- Keep a compact scorecard. Record average and peak concurrent viewers; views, total watch time, and average view duration; impressions and click-through rate when available; chat, reactions, and subscribers gained; plus duration, format, reporting date range, and reporting surface.
YouTube’s cited documentation defines these metrics but does not set a universal “good” peak, chat rate, or average view duration. Treat comparisons with your own earlier streams as local comparisons, not platform-wide benchmarks. High views can coexist with short viewing duration, and active chat can come from a smaller audience; inspect the combination rather than using one metric as a proxy for all performance.
