YouTube Loop Stream Cost Calculator: Include PC Power, Internet, and Cloud Fees

Calculate the real cost of a continuous YouTube loop stream by separating PC power, internet overages, and optional cloud charges.

A 24/7 YouTube loop stream has no universal YouTube live-stream fee. Its cost depends on what you already own and pay for, the PC or encoder’s measured electricity use, any internet overage, and any optional cloud service you choose. Use the calculator below to estimate those costs on the same time period and quality assumptions.

Here, a “loop stream” means a continuous live broadcast of pre-recorded content. The estimate is not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting: the streaming method and platform behavior can affect continuity.

Calculate the costs that actually change

Enter your own runtime, average wall power, electricity tariff, outbound bitrate, ISP plan details, and any cloud configuration. Separate incremental expenses from bills you already owe. A household internet subscription, for example, is not an additional streaming cost unless the stream triggers a plan upgrade or overage.

Cost Calculator method What to enter
PC electricity (average watts ÷ 1,000) × stream hours × electricity price per kWh Measured average draw at the wall, hours streamed, and your tariff
Streaming data outbound bitrate × stream hours, converted from bits to bytes Configured encoder bitrate and operating time
Internet cost attributable to streaming Incremental overage or add-on charge, if any Your ISP’s allowance, metering rules, and overage price
Cloud or managed service Provider charges for the selected plan or configuration over the same period Subscription, active-channel or encoding time, outputs, storage, and other applicable fees

Estimate electricity from measured power

Use the device’s average power draw while streaming, not its maximum-rated power. If a PC averages 150 W for 720 hours and your tariff is $0.20/kWh, the estimate is (150 ÷ 1,000) × 720 × $0.20 = $21.60. Replace the example inputs with your own. A plug-in electricity usage meter can help measure wall power; that is an optional way to improve the input, not a tested product recommendation.

For U.S. context only, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports an 18.31 cents/kWh residential average retail price for July 2026 in its Electricity Monthly Update. Its 2025 annual residential average was 17.30 cents/kWh. These national averages are not individual utility rates: prices vary locally, and EIA says its averages include generation, transmission, distribution, taxes, and fees. Use your bill or tariff when possible. EIA explains the scope of its average prices here.

Estimate upload data without counting viewers

For a decimal-unit estimate, bitrate in megabits per second × hours × 0.45 gives gigabytes uploaded: the calculation converts megabits to bits, seconds to hours, and bits to decimal bytes. At 6 Mbps for 720 hours, that is about 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) before protocol overhead. If your ISP reports binary units, 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, so the reported figure may differ. The estimate uses the creator’s outbound encoder bitrate and operating time; do not multiply it by audience size. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.

Your ISP’s data allowance, whether upload traffic is metered, and any overage price are plan-specific; YouTube does not set those terms. Enter only the additional charge caused by streaming. If you choose to allocate part of a fixed subscription to the stream, label it as an allocation rather than an incremental expense.

Choose a streaming setup to compare

Compare each option for the same runtime and output quality. Count purchases and incremental charges in the period they apply; keep already-paid household or business costs distinct from new costs.

Setup Costs to include Practical trade-offs
Existing home PC with encoder software Measured electricity; any incremental ISP charge; optional separate hardware-wear estimate Uses equipment you already have, but the PC, network connection, and encoder setup must remain available and be monitored.
Dedicated local device or standalone encoder Purchase cost over your chosen comparison period, measured electricity, and any incremental ISP charge Can avoid dedicating a general-purpose PC, but still relies on local power and internet. You supply and configure the hardware.
Cloud encoding or managed continuous-stream service Subscription or metered processing charges, plus applicable storage or plan limits Can reduce the need to leave a home PC on; check provider terms, configuration, recovery behavior, and quality limits.

YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software and standalone hardware encoders and lists cloud tools as options; these are alternatives, not a required paid service. Its guide recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for the connection, testing upload speed, and testing before going live. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the incoming stream for viewers. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Include cloud fees only when the service applies

YouTube does not automatically add a cloud-encoding charge to an ordinary encoder stream. A separate service may charge for processing, active channel time, output, distribution, storage, or a subscription, depending on its terms.

Google Cloud Live Stream API example

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing is one concrete example of a separately metered option, not a baseline price for YouTube streaming. Its charges depend on active channel time and configured input and output resolution; a channel may count as active even without input. The pricing page specifies a ten-minute minimum charge followed by duration rounded up to the nearest minute. Region, input/output tiers, codecs, and optional features affect the total, and the service has no free usage tier.

The pricing page’s examples show why configuration matters: one us-central1 example with two UHD inputs and seven mixed outputs totals $8.89 per active hour; a specified example including captioning totals $46.26 for that hour because captioning is priced per minute. These are illustrative configurations, not estimates for your stream. Check the current regional pricing and your exact settings before budgeting.

For this service specifically, Google Cloud documentation says a channel session lasts 24 hours and may restart after 24 hours while active. That limit is not a statement about other providers. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a single YouTube live session can run forever without interruption. See Google Cloud Live Stream API quotas and limits (page last updated 2026-09-30 UTC) and YouTube’s encoder guide.

Use the calculator in a repeatable way

  1. Choose a comparison period. Enter the same number of streaming hours for every setup—such as one month of continuous operation.
  2. Set the intended stream quality and bitrate. Use the encoder’s outbound bitrate and an upload speed that can sustain it reliably. YouTube recommends testing the connection and stream before going live; its encoder settings guide explains bitrate and resolution considerations.
  3. Measure local power. Enter average wall watts for the PC or dedicated device while it performs the streaming job, then apply your actual price per kWh.
  4. Check ISP terms. Enter only a streaming-triggered overage or add-on, if your plan has one. Keep a fixed subscription separate unless you are explicitly allocating part of it.
  5. Add relevant provider charges. Use the current subscription or metered price for the selected configuration, region, output, and storage. Do not assign cloud fees to an ordinary YouTube encoder workflow.
  6. Compare the totals and what they buy. Note quality, local equipment requirements, setup and monitoring work, and recovery arrangements alongside each cost.

Common calculation mistakes

  • Using rated watts as actual draw: use average measured wall power during the stream where possible.
  • Charging the full internet bill to the stream: include overage or an add-on as incremental cost; otherwise mark any allocation clearly.
  • Multiplying data by viewers: estimate the creator’s upload from encoder bitrate and operating hours. Viewer delivery is handled separately by YouTube’s transcoding and delivery system.
  • Treating cloud pricing as universal: cloud encoding charges depend on product, region, configuration, and runtime. Check the chosen provider’s current terms.
  • Assuming endless session continuity: YouTube archives streams under 12 hours automatically, while service-specific session limits and interruptions can affect a continuous schedule.
  • Comparing unlike periods or quality: align runtime and intended output quality before drawing a cost conclusion.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream loops in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for plan details and the cloud vs PC cost calculator to compare costs. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
