There is no universal cost winner for running a YouTube loop 24/7 from Germany. Measure your home server’s average power draw at the wall, apply your own marginal electricity rate, then compare that monthly energy cost with a current all-in cloud VM quote for the exact configuration and region. Electricity alone is not the full home cost, and a VM’s advertised starting rate is not its full bill.
Calculate the home server’s monthly electricity cost
For a machine that runs continuously, use 730 hours as a practical average-month estimate:
Electricity cost per month (€) = average wall power (W) ÷ 1,000 × 730 × your marginal electricity price (€/kWh).
For example, insert the measured watts from your own setup and the €/kWh rate that applies to additional consumption on your bill. This is an energy calculation, not a German national average: the available official material does not establish a representative household tariff or a typical home-server wattage. Don’t substitute a CPU’s advertised TDP for the server’s measured wall draw.

Measure the complete setup
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the server as it will actually run: include the encoder workload and any equipment whose consumption is incremental to streaming. Let the reading reflect normal operation rather than relying on a component specification. No particular meter model is established here.
Use the marginal price from your own electricity bill, in euros per kilowatt-hour. Keep the runtime assumption visible; 730 hours is useful for an always-on monthly estimate, but a shorter billing period or downtime changes the total.

Add costs beyond energy
The formula covers electricity only. Add hardware purchase or replacement cost where relevant, maintenance, and any incremental internet or connectivity cost caused by the stream. If the machine already exists and would remain on anyway, distinguish its existing cost from the additional cost of operating it for the loop.
Build a complete monthly cloud VM cost
Get a current quote for the VM in the location you intend to use, then include every charge needed to keep the encoder operating and sending the stream. Do not treat a provider’s starting price as an all-in monthly total.

Cloud billing terms differ. AWS lists On-Demand, Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, Spot, and Dedicated Hosts; the appropriate amount depends on the selected model and workload. Hetzner describes hourly billing for shorter use and monthly caps, and says a cloud server remains billable while it exists. Check the provider’s current calculator or checkout rather than relying on an old comparison. Hetzner announced updated cloud-server pricing for new orders and rescales from 15 June 2026; older price comparisons may therefore be stale. The available price information does not establish a complete current monthly quote for a suitable VM in Germany.
Compare costs and operating trade-offs

Find the energy-only break-even
Compare the home electricity figure with the cloud VM’s monthly cost. If the electricity figure is lower, home is cheaper on those two line items only. That does not prove it is cheaper after hardware, connectivity, and maintenance, or that it will be more reliable. If home electricity is higher, a VM may still not be the lower total-cost option once its storage, traffic, VAT, and other charges are included.

Factor in continuity and recovery
A home setup depends on power, router, ISP, and your ability to restart or recover the encoder. A cloud VM moves the physical machine off-site, but you still own the OS, encoder, and stream recovery. Hetzner says it will use “commercially reasonable efforts” to achieve 99.9% monthly availability for its Cloud Servers. This is a provider-stated commitment with conditional remedies, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting or zero lost viewers.

Match upload capacity to the YouTube stream
YouTube publishes recommended encoder bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate and recommends testing upload bitrate. Use the official YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the quality you plan to send, then test the actual upload path. YouTube’s streaming tips say the stream bitrate should ideally be 20% below available upload bandwidth. Leave that headroom; other people and devices sharing a home connection can reduce the upload available to the encoder.

Plan for stream interruptions and archiving limits
YouTube’s live encoder setup documentation says a live stream ends when the encoder stops sending content, and that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. It lists CamStreamer as supporting continuous streams, but that describes a vendor’s application; it is not a blanket promise that any 24/7 stream will stay live or archive indefinitely without interruption. Plan to monitor the stream and recover it if transmission stops.
Clear the rights for looped content
YouTube’s Terms of Service require creators to have the necessary rights for livestream content, including applicable music rights, and to comply with laws and platform rules. A video being uploaded or available online does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it in a loop.
Let the loop run from home—or in the cloud
DIY: use a home server or a cloud VM
- Measure and price the home setup. Run the intended encoder workload, measure average wall power with a plug-in usage monitor, and calculate monthly electricity using your own €/kWh rate and 730 hours for continuous operation. Add incremental hardware, maintenance, and connectivity costs where applicable.
- Get a current VM total. Select the region and instance that can run your encoder, then include storage, included and excess traffic, public address, backups or monitoring you need, VAT, and the billing model. Compare the resulting quote with the home total rather than with a headline starting price.
- Configure the encoder and YouTube stream. Use YouTube’s current bitrate recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate, test sustained upload, and leave bandwidth headroom. Keep the stream key private and configure the encoder to send to YouTube’s recommended endpoint, preferably RTMPS.
- Run a continuity test. Confirm that the encoder sends steadily, check the live output, and decide how you will detect and recover from a dropped connection or stopped process. A VM does not remove the need to maintain its OS and encoder.
