YouTube says it shows viewers thumbnails that match their language setting. For a more complete global approach, pair those images with translated titles and descriptions—and treat localization as a way to serve audiences better, not a guarantee of extra reach.
How multilingual thumbnails work
YouTube’s localized-thumbnail feature lets you upload thumbnail images by language for a long-form video. YouTube says viewers will be shown thumbnails that match their language setting. Its matching can also use signals such as a viewer’s location and recently watched videos, so selecting a language does not guarantee that every viewer will immediately see a particular version. YouTube Help explains localized thumbnails and other multi-language features.
A localized thumbnail is separate from translated metadata. It changes the thumbnail shown for a language; it does not translate the video’s title or description, nor does it by itself promise placement in search results. YouTube says translated titles and descriptions can appear in search results for people using those languages. YouTube’s guidance on translating video titles and descriptions describes that discovery role.
Add a thumbnail for another language in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content.
- Open the long-form video you want to localize.
- Upload a thumbnail for the video if one is not already set.
- Open Languages.
- Select the language you want to add.
- Add that language’s thumbnail, then select Update.
The labels and workflow above follow YouTube’s documented Studio instructions. That help page describes the feature for long-form videos; it does not establish that Shorts have the same workflow. Check the current Studio interface rather than assuming a Short supports localized thumbnails.

Build a localization package, not just an image
For each target language, prepare a thumbnail and translated title and description. Add subtitles or language audio tracks where they fit the video and your audience; these are separate localization features, not part of the thumbnail upload. YouTube says translated metadata can help viewers find a video in search using those languages. Its multi-language audio feature is also distinct from localized thumbnails. See YouTube’s multi-language feature guidance and its metadata translation instructions.
Keep the promise consistent
Translate the thumbnail text and title so they describe the same video accurately. Avoid adding a claim, character, feature, or outcome that the video does not deliver. The wording can change to sound natural in each language, but the promise should not. YouTube’s general advice is to make titles accurate and succinct. Its thumbnail and title tips cover this guidance.

Design for small screens
Keep text brief enough to read when the thumbnail is small. A phrase that fits in one language may become much longer in another; edit or reflow it rather than shrinking it until it is hard to read. Check the image on mobile and desktop, since thumbnails display differently across devices. YouTube recommends simple, readable thumbnail designs. Applying that advice to each language is good practice, not a separate platform requirement. YouTube’s design guidance provides the general principles.
Check cultural and audience fit
Review whether the image, colors, references, and text will make sense to the intended audience. Audience tastes and thumbnail styles can differ and change over time, so a direct translation is not always the clearest presentation. Keep each version recognizably connected to the same video while adapting what needs to be clearer for that audience. This is a design judgment, not a guarantee of better performance.

What the audience figures do—and do not—show
YouTube Help says that, on average, over two-thirds of a creator’s audience watch time comes from outside the creator’s home area. The page does not state a year for this figure. It indicates why creators may care about international audiences, but it does not measure the effect of localized thumbnails. YouTube’s translation guidance gives the figure.
YouTube also reports that 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails; the Help page does not state a year. That figure concerns custom thumbnails generally, not multilingual versions. Separately, YouTube says creators who uploaded multi-language audio saw over 25% of their watch time come from views in a video’s non-primary language; that figure concerns audio, not thumbnail localization. Neither statistic proves that localized thumbnails alone increase reach. YouTube’s thumbnail guidance and its multi-language feature page provide those figures.

Make and upload language variants
A design tool can help you create consistent versions from a shared layout. Canva’s YouTube thumbnail templates are one option for making the images; you still upload each localized version through YouTube Studio’s Languages page. Review the final export at small size and confirm that the text and image match the language and video before updating.
