A power cut can interrupt a YouTube stream at several points: the PC may stay off when electricity returns, the router may take longer to reconnect, OBS may not launch, or YouTube may wait for you to press Go Live. To recover automatically, configure and test each link in that chain: power restoration, computer startup, network readiness, OBS startup and reconnect, then YouTube’s broadcast behavior. YouTube’s auto-start setting does not turn on a computer or open OBS.
What needs to happen for OBS to recover?
For viewers to see the stream again, mains power must return, the PC must start, the router and internet connection must be ready, OBS must launch and send a valid feed, and YouTube must start or resume the broadcast. Check the final result in YouTube Live Control Room; an OBS preview alone does not confirm that viewers can watch.
- Electricity returns and the PC is configured to respond to it.
- The computer boots and reaches the account or session used for streaming.
- The router, ONT or modem reconnects and internet access is available.
- OBS launches with the correct YouTube service, server and stream key.
- OBS connects to YouTube’s ingest server and sends video and audio.
- YouTube starts the broadcast automatically, if auto-start is enabled, or a person presses Go Live.
- Live Control Room shows the expected preview and stream health.
The India context does not change these technical dependencies. The sources available for this topic do not establish India-specific outage rates or a guaranteed recovery time, so test the equipment and connection at the actual location.
Configure recovery in stages
1. Decide what should happen when AC power returns
Some PCs expose a firmware setting for what to do after AC power loss, such as staying off, powering on, or restoring the previous state. Its name, availability and menu location depend on the motherboard or PC model. Consult the manufacturer’s documentation for that exact machine; there is no universal BIOS/UEFI path to rely on.

If the computer remains off after power returns, troubleshoot this setting before changing OBS. An app cannot recover a stream while its host PC is off.
2. Ensure the streaming account and OBS launch
Configure OBS to start in the Windows account or session that will be active after the PC boots. Use a supported startup mechanism for the Windows version and machine, then verify it with a normal reboot. Startup behavior may depend on account sign-in and system configuration; do not assume a shortcut or scheduled task works identically on every PC.
An OBS Project forum discussion from March 2024 mentions startup shortcuts and Task Scheduler, but it is community advice rather than universal, current Windows or OBS instructions. Treat any such method as something to verify on the target system.
3. Make network readiness part of the plan
A PC can start before the router, ONT or internet connection is ready. OBS may then fail its first connection attempt. An OBS forum discussion raises the possibility that auto-reconnect will not handle that initial failure in every setup; this is not an official guarantee about all OBS versions or configurations.
If that happens, use a tested delay or retry strategy appropriate to the PC and OBS version. Do not count on a delay alone: test it by starting the PC while the network is unavailable, then restoring connectivity and confirming OBS connects without manual action.

4. Check the YouTube connection in OBS
Confirm OBS is configured for the intended YouTube service and server, and that it has the current stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential/address the encoder uses to send the feed. A power cut alone does not mean the key needs resetting. If you reset the key or OBS reports a key error, copy the current key into OBS. Keep it private: do not expose it in screenshots, recordings or logs.
YouTube’s Manage live stream settings page covers stream settings including the key and auto-start/auto-stop behavior. Avoid changing keys as a general troubleshooting step unless they are outdated, reset or identified as the problem.
5. Choose whether YouTube should auto-start
Auto-start governs what YouTube does when it detects an encoder feed. It does not power on the PC or launch OBS.

Check the setting in YouTube Studio’s live stream settings for the stream you use. The exact controls can depend on the stream configuration. Confirm the behavior in a private or unlisted test rather than assuming that OBS’s connection automatically makes the broadcast public.
6. Verify what viewers receive
YouTube recommends setting up and testing the encoder in advance, checking the preview and stream health, and testing failover rather than assuming it works. See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer and Streaming tips.

A YouTube preview and healthy status are more meaningful than an OBS preview alone, but they still do not prove that your whole recovery sequence works after an outage. Confirm picture, audio, the selected broadcast and the viewer-facing result.
Test the complete sequence safely
Use a private or unlisted test stream so you can check recovery without unexpectedly broadcasting to your audience.

- Test a brief internet interruption. Restore the connection and see whether OBS reconnects and YouTube receives a healthy feed.
- Reboot the PC normally. Confirm OBS launches under the intended account and connects once the network is available.
- If your hardware permits a controlled test, check what the PC does after power is restored. Do not create an unsafe outage or interrupt equipment in a way that risks damage or data loss.
- Test the case where the PC starts before the router or internet connection is ready. Confirm your chosen delay or retry behavior actually recovers.
- In Live Control Room, check the preview and health, then verify whether YouTube starts automatically or waits for Go Live, according to your chosen setting.
YouTube’s guidance recommends upload headroom: it suggests leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s needs. This is a YouTube recommendation, not a guarantee against interruptions. Other devices, unstable service or a path to the ingest server can still affect the stream.
Troubleshoot by where recovery stops
The PC stays off after electricity returns
Check the computer’s AC-recovery behavior in its manufacturer documentation. Firmware options vary by model; changing OBS settings cannot solve a PC that does not start.
The PC starts, but OBS does not open
Check whether OBS is set to launch for the account or session active after boot. Reboot and verify the behavior on that machine. If the startup method requires a user sign-in, account permissions or a particular session, account for that in the setup.

OBS opens but cannot connect
First confirm internet access is available, including the router and ONT/modem if present. Then check OBS’s connection status and logs, the configured YouTube server and the current stream key. YouTube’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream distinguishes encoder issues from outbound network problems. OBS also notes that unstable connectivity or bitrate exceeding available capacity can contribute to disconnections or dropped frames; see OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

Check whether auto-start is off and the broadcast is waiting for a manual Go Live action. Confirm that the correct stream is selected and the key in OBS is current. YouTube’s stream-key troubleshooting guidance explains how to update a key when needed.
YouTube shows a feed, but a camera or capture source is missing
Test source recovery separately from internet reconnection. A camera or capture device may not reinitialize just because OBS reconnects to YouTube. An OBS forum post reports a camera-recovery case, but it is an individual user report rather than a rule that applies to every device.
OBS looks healthy, but viewers see an interrupted or unhealthy stream
Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and preview, upload capacity, and whether other devices are using the connection. A healthy local OBS preview does not establish that the outbound path is stable. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips also advise monitoring the stream.

A UPS is not a substitute for configuring the PC to start after AC power returns, ensuring OBS launches, or handling an ISP outage. It can reduce the interruption from a short local power loss, but cannot guarantee continuity through a longer outage or a loss of internet service.
