If a YouTube playlist says a video is private, you can watch it only if its owner has shared it with your account. If you own the video, check its Visibility setting in YouTube Studio; if you don’t, ask the uploader for access or find an accessible version. Playlist owners can remove the blocked entry and add another video, but a new upload cannot replace the original in place and will have a different URL.
What “private” means in a YouTube playlist
A private video is visible only to its owner and viewers the owner chooses. It is not necessarily deleted: the uploader may still have it and can change its visibility or share it with selected viewers. A private playlist entry will not play for you unless the uploader has given you access. YouTube Help: Change video privacy settings; YouTube Help: Share playlists.
Unlisted and private are different. Anyone with an unlisted video’s link can watch it, although unlisted videos generally do not appear in search. Public videos can be watched by anyone and may appear in search. The uploader—not a playlist viewer—controls these visibility settings.
If you’re watching someone else’s playlist
- Save the clues that are still visible. Note the title, channel name, surrounding playlist entries, or any link you already have. Search the title together with the channel name for an accessible copy or a newer upload. This is a practical search, not a guaranteed YouTube recovery feature; YouTube does not document a universal way to reveal every private playlist entry’s identity.
- Ask the uploader for access. Contact the channel owner and ask them to share the private video with your account, or to make it unlisted or public if they intend others to watch. An unlisted link can be watched by anyone who has it; private access is restricted to people the owner selects.
- If you have a link, try it while signed in to the invited account. Private access depends on the owner sharing the video with the account you use. If access still fails, ask the uploader to confirm which account was granted access.
If you own the playlist but not the video
You can manage the playlist entry, but you cannot change another channel’s video privacy. Find your playlist from the You tab in YouTube, or manage playlists in YouTube Studio under Content > Playlists. YouTube’s playlist guidance says a private video will not play for playlist viewers unless its uploader has shared it with them. YouTube Help: Create & manage playlists (Android).

- Open the playlist you own and identify the inaccessible entry using its visible title or position.
- Remove the entry if you no longer want it in the playlist.
- Search for an accessible version or ask the original uploader to share the video.
- Add the accessible video to the playlist. If it is a new upload, update any external links you control as well: its URL will differ from the old one.
If you own the private video
Change visibility on desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content in the left menu and find the video.
- Check the Visibility setting. Choose Public, Private, or Unlisted according to who should be able to watch, then save the change.

If you did not make the video private
If you did not upload or change the visibility of the affected videos, check your email for a YouTube notice about suspicious activity. YouTube says it may make videos private if it believes they were uploaded by a hacker. Review who can access your channel and secure your Google Account; if you find unauthorized uploads, follow YouTube’s account-security guidance. Can you replace the video without changing its URL?
No. YouTube says, “You can’t replace a video, every new video you upload to YouTube gets a new URL.” You can change the visibility of the existing upload, which preserves that upload and its URL. If you upload a substitute, it is a separate video with a new URL; update the playlist and any other links you control. YouTube also suggests editing the existing video or adding a card that points viewers to an updated version. YouTube Help: Replace or delete your video.
If the video was deleted, YouTube describes deletion as permanent. The available guidance does not establish a general way for a viewer to restore a deleted video—or to recover a private video belonging to someone else.

Could an older unlisted video have become private?
One possible explanation applies to a specific group of uploads: starting July 23, 2021, older unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 became private unless their owners opted out of the change. If your video fits that age and history, YouTube’s documented options include keeping it private, changing its visibility, or re-uploading it. Re-uploading creates a new URL and does not transfer the old video’s views or comments. YouTube notes that copyright-claimed videos may not be downloadable through the routes described in its guidance, so do not assume you can always download and re-upload a copy.
