An “unavailable” playlist entry can mean the video is private, restricted, removed, or simply blocked in the player you are using. The message alone may not reveal which. Check whether the video opens on its regular watch page, confirm you are signed in to the right account, and use the steps below to identify who can fix it. If the video belongs to someone else, only its uploader or YouTube can change its access or removal status.
Why videos become unavailable in a YouTube playlist
A playlist can still contain an entry after the video’s access or playback status changes. YouTube Help identifies several possible causes; an unavailable message by itself does not prove that the video was deleted or that a copyright claim is involved.
- The video is private. The uploader may have changed its visibility or shared it only with selected accounts. A playlist link does not grant access to a private video.
- Playback is restricted in an embedded playlist. The uploader may have disabled embedding, or the video may be age restricted. YouTube’s guidance on this point concerns embedded playlist playback; disabled embedding does not necessarily make the regular YouTube watch page unavailable. - YouTube removed the video or limited it. Possible grounds include Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, copyright, and trademark issues. Copyright restrictions can also block or mute a video in some countries or regions. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot video removals.
- It is unavailable in your country or region. An uploader may limit availability based on licensing rights, or YouTube may block content to comply with local law. YouTube Help: Video isn’t available in my country/region.
- The wrong Google account is signed in. A private video shared with one account may not play for another account you use.
- The playlist itself has changed or contains a removed entry. Playlist visibility and the visibility of each video are separate settings. YouTube’s playlist policy also advises playlist owners to remove videos identified as removed or deleted. YouTube Help: Playlists policy.
Diagnose the problem in this order
- Record the exact message. Note whether it appears for one entry or the whole playlist, and whether you are using an embedded player or YouTube itself. A generic unavailable message does not identify a single cause.
- Check the signed-in account. If the uploader shared a private video with a particular account, switch to that account and try again.
- Open the video’s direct link. If you have the link, try the regular YouTube watch page. This can help distinguish an embedded-playback issue from the video’s own access status. It does not bypass a restriction.
- Work out who controls the setting. If someone else uploaded the video, ask them whether it is private, restricted, or removed and request access if appropriate. You cannot change their settings or reverse YouTube’s decision.
- If you own the video, inspect YouTube Studio. Check the video’s Visibility setting and any policy, copyright, or security notices. Follow the appeal or resolution route specified in the relevant notice.
- If you own the playlist, check its visibility. Update the playlist setting if needed and remove entries YouTube identifies as removed or deleted. Making a playlist public will not make a private video public.
What to do for each cause
Private video: ask the uploader for access
Private videos can be viewed only by the owner and people the owner selects. If you are a viewer, ask the uploader to share the video with the Google account you use or to change its visibility if they choose. You cannot make another person’s private video viewable by changing your playlist.
Unlisted is different: YouTube Help says, “Anyone with the video link can watch and share Unlisted videos and playlists.” That access still depends on the video remaining available and on having its link. YouTube Help: Change video privacy settings.

Embedded playback fails: try the watch page
If the entry fails only inside an embedded playlist, open it on YouTube directly. The uploader may have disabled embedding, or the video may be age restricted. YouTube also says private videos will not play in a playlist unless the uploader shared them with you. This check helps identify the kind of playback problem; it does not remove age, account, or other access restrictions.
Removal or copyright notice: follow the owner’s notice
If you uploaded the video, read the notice in YouTube Studio and use the specific resolution or appeal process YouTube provides. The appropriate route depends on the stated reason. An appeal is not a promise that YouTube will restore the video. If you are only a viewer, the uploader or YouTube controls the remedy.

Country or region restriction: playlist settings will not override it
Availability may reflect the rights holder’s licensing choices or a local legal restriction. You can check whether the problem differs by location, but changing playlist privacy does not change regional availability. Do not assume a consumer tool can legitimately restore access against a restriction.
Unexpected privacy changes: check channel security
If you own the channel and videos unexpectedly became private, YouTube says suspicious activity suggesting a hacker uploaded them may lead YouTube to set videos to private and notify the owner. Check for a channel notice, review unfamiliar uploads and account access, and follow YouTube’s security steps before changing visibility. YouTube Help: Why did YouTube change my videos to private?

If you own the playlist, keep it maintainable
Review the playlist’s privacy separately from the privacy of its entries. You can change playlist visibility in YouTube Studio or YouTube, but that affects the playlist, not the permissions on its videos. If YouTube identifies an entry as removed or deleted, playlist owners should remove it where appropriate under YouTube’s playlist policy. These steps maintain your playlist; they do not recover an unavailable video.
For a public playlist used on a site, check playback in the actual embedded player as well as on YouTube. A video that works on its watch page may still fail in an embed if embedding is disabled, while private or age-restricted videos can also prevent embedded playlist playback.

What you can and cannot recover
- You may regain access if the uploader shares a private video with your account or changes its visibility.
- You may resolve your own video’s status by following the notice and appeal or security steps available to its owner in YouTube Studio.
- You cannot change another uploader’s settings or overturn a removal as a viewer.
- A playlist setting cannot restore a missing video. It does not override private access, regional restrictions, age restrictions, disabled embedding, or a removal.
- The former title may not be recoverable. YouTube’s guidance explains availability causes and owner remedies, but does not establish that viewers can always reveal the former title of an unavailable entry.
