Shared Library visibility does not mean the apps play every item identically. The key practical distinction is YouTube Music’s music-video scope.
Which app should you use?
Choose YouTube for mixed or non-music video collections
Use a playlist in the main YouTube app if it might include tutorials, gaming videos, Shorts, or other content that is not a music video. That keeps the collection useful even when its contents do not fit YouTube Music’s music-centered experience.
Choose YouTube Music for music-focused listening and discovery
Use YouTube Music when you want to organize songs and music videos together in a music-oriented library. YouTube says its music playlists draw on machine learning, social signals, signals from other Google products and services, and human input; it also says those playlists are among the inputs to YouTube’s recommendation system. This describes signals used for music playlists and recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular user-created playlist or song will be recommended.

What happens when you use one playlist in both apps?
YouTube Music playlists appear in the Library of both YouTube Music and YouTube. A playlist created in the main YouTube app can also be viewed in YouTube Music, but the Music app surfaces only its music videos. If the list contains non-music videos, use the YouTube app to access those items as part of the collection.
You can also save playlists in YouTube to find and view later; saved and created playlists are available from the You tab. Whether other viewers can see a playlist depends on its privacy setting.

Creating, editing, and sharing playlists
Both apps support playlist creation, but the available controls and paths depend on which app and device you are using. YouTube supports creating a playlist from a video or Short and managing playlist privacy. YouTube Music supports making playlists from songs, changing titles and descriptions, adjusting privacy, reordering or deleting items, and collaboration.
- Check privacy: A playlist’s privacy setting affects who can see it. YouTube Music says supervised accounts default to private playlists.
- Check collaboration availability: YouTube Music describes collaboration availability in relation to channel or account role; do not assume every account has the same controls.
- Use the app where you manage the list: Exact interface steps can differ between desktop and mobile, and controls may vary by account.
Playlist versus an always-on YouTube stream
A playlist is for organizing and accessing videos or music; it is not itself a 24/7 live broadcast.
