Choose a YouTube radio livestream when the show depends on happening together—such as a scheduled program, listener interaction in live chat, or a shared event. Choose an uploaded radio mix when you want a finished, on-demand program that viewers can play whenever they like. A station can also combine them: livestream the show, then make its public archive available for replay, provided the music rights cover both uses.
Livestream or upload: the practical difference
| What matters | Livestream | Uploaded radio mix |
|---|---|---|
| Listening experience | A scheduled shared event; viewers can participate through live chat. | An on-demand program; the uploaded video does not include live chat. |
| After the program | It can become an archived video, subject to processing and replay settings. | It is available as a standalone on-demand video. |
| Qualified public watch hours | Can qualify when the stream is public and archived, subject to YouTube’s rules. Unarchived livestreams do not qualify. | Public long-form video watch hours can qualify, subject to YouTube’s rules. |
| Production work | Requires stream setup, an encoder workflow, scheduling and chat moderation. | Requires a finished mix and video prepared for upload. |
| Music rights | Rights must cover the live use and any archived use; platform matching can still interrupt a stream. | Rights and monetization policies apply to the upload too. Uploading instead of going live does not clear the music. |
YouTube documents both live interaction and converting a completed broadcast into a video. Neither format is established as universally better for reach or revenue; choose based on the program, rights and production capacity.
When a livestream fits a station
Go live when simultaneity is part of the programming: a presenter is taking requests, listeners are gathering for a scheduled show, or the station is covering a shared event. YouTube’s production guide describes scheduling a stream, encouraging reminders and interacting in live chat. These are platform features, not a guarantee of audience growth.
A live program also asks more of the station at broadcast time. Someone must manage the stream workflow and monitor chat, and the station needs a plan for interruptions and the replay afterward. If the station cannot reliably produce and moderate the show, a prepared mix is usually the simpler format.

When an uploaded mix fits better
Upload a finished mix when the goal is a self-contained program listeners can start on demand, without coordinating around a broadcast time. This suits a station that prioritizes a durable program page and can prepare its audio and video in advance. A public long-form upload may contribute qualified watch hours under YouTube’s rules, but format alone does not establish monetization eligibility.
An upload still needs appropriate rights for the music and other material it contains. It also remains subject to YouTube’s originality and monetization policies; simply packaging a playlist as a video does not establish that it is original or eligible for monetization.

Can a station livestream and keep the mix?
Yes. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says that after a broadcast completes, YouTube converts it into a video and adds it to the channel’s uploaded videos after processing. The delay depends on broadcast length. Archive and DVR settings affect replay: YouTube says viewers need archive and DVR enabled for playback immediately after a broadcast ends. See the YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
YouTube’s production guide, accessed October 3, 2026, says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and recommends that teams record longer streams for manual upload. Treat that threshold as guidance rather than a guarantee for every channel configuration: confirm the current behavior and settings in YouTube Studio before relying on it. The guide is available as a Google live production guide.

A scheduled broadcast followed by a public archive can serve listeners who want the live event and those who arrive later. Before choosing this approach, confirm that your music rights cover both live transmission and the archived video.
Clear music rights before choosing either format
YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to hold the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other rights participants, as well as to follow applicable laws and territory requirements. YouTube scans livestreams for matches to third-party content. If matching material remains after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent that platform action: YouTube says a station with licensed third-party material should ask the rights owner to add its channel to the Content ID allowlist. Archived livestreams may receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast ends. Passing a live scan therefore does not guarantee that the archive will remain claim-free, and Content ID matching by itself does not decide whether a use is legally licensed. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Check that your permission covers online video and live streaming, not just broadcast radio or in-person performance.
- Confirm territories, the relevant recordings and compositions, and whether the permission extends to an archived or uploaded version.
- If the channel has permission for music that may match in Content ID, ask the rights owner about channel allowlisting before going live.
- Keep records of permissions and any relevant territory limits so you can respond to a claim or interruption.
Watch hours and monetization: what format does—and does not—change
YouTube’s qualified watch-hours guidance says eligible hours can come from public long-form videos, including archived livestreams. Private, unlisted or deleted videos, ad views, Shorts watch hours and livestreams that are not archived are excluded. This is a YouTube Partner Program eligibility rule, not evidence that one format earns more recommendations, views or revenue. Check YouTube’s qualified watch-hours guidance for the applicable requirements.

YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to videos, including livestreams, and expects monetized content to be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic or repetitive. A station should make its own editorial and production contribution clear. Switching from an upload to a livestream does not replace either rights clearance or meaningful originality. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
A decision checklist for your station
- Choose live if listeners need to be present at a scheduled time, the show depends on interaction, and your team can run and moderate it.
- Choose an upload if the finished program matters more than a shared broadcast time and you want a straightforward on-demand release.
- Combine them if you have the rights and production capacity for both live use and replay, and can verify archive settings before the show.
- Resolve rights first if any music is third-party material. A claim risk can affect either format, and live Content ID matching can disrupt a broadcast even when the station says it has a license.
- Do not choose by assumed performance: the available YouTube guidance describes platform mechanics and eligibility, not a universal reach, watch-time or revenue advantage for either format.
