Confirm that the protocol matches the URL you copied, then check YouTube’s incoming preview and error messages. YouTube’s published help pages do not define “RTMP 404” as one diagnosis, so the code alone does not identify the cause.
Verify the address and key in YouTube Studio
- Open the right broadcast. In YouTube Studio, enter Live Control Room for the intended scheduled or current stream, then open its Stream settings. Use the values shown for that broadcast, not an address or key copied from another stream. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains where stream settings are managed.
- Compare the server address. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and compare its Server field with the Stream URL displayed in Live Control Room. Copy the URL from YouTube into the encoder’s server setting; do not substitute a sample address from an unrelated guide. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Compare the separate stream key. Check the OBS Stream Key against the key for the same broadcast in Live Control Room. The address and key are separate settings. If you reset or replace the key in Studio, update OBS with the new key as well. YouTube documents getting a new key as an encoder troubleshooting step, but does not say that a 404 specifically proves the key is wrong. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Match the protocol to the address. If you intend to use RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL using the lock control beside Stream URL in Live Control Room, then use RTMPS for both the protocol and server configuration. Do not mix an RTMP URL with RTMPS settings. YouTube’s RTMPS setup guide also suggests trying port 443 if the URL is correct but an SSL error persists.
- Start OBS and inspect YouTube’s response. Look in Live Control Room for an incoming preview and any stream-health or error messages. Use the actual message shown there, together with OBS’s exact error text, to choose the next troubleshooting step. YouTube describes these dashboard checks in its live streaming error messages guide.
Keep RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS settings distinct
RTMP and RTMPS use the corresponding stream address and protocol configuration. HLS is a separate ingestion setup: YouTube instructs users to select HLS and copy its generated HTTPS URL. Do not paste an HLS URL into an RTMP or RTMPS configuration, or select HLS unless that setup is intended and supported by the encoder. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
Protocol requirements can also depend on the streaming mode. For example, YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions discuss OBS protocol configuration specifically in the context of HDR; do not assume that a setting described for HDR applies to every stream.
What an RTMP 404 does—and does not—tell you
The official YouTube help pages cited here establish that the encoder needs the correct Stream URL and separate stream key, that RTMPS has its own URL retrieval steps, and that Live Control Room displays stream errors. They do not assign one definitive meaning or fix to an OBS “RTMP 404.” Treat the address, key, and protocol as sensible checks, not as confirmed causes. If they match, use the exact OBS message and YouTube’s dashboard status rather than guessing that the account, endpoint, or key is at fault.
