A YouTube RTMP connection error from an Ubuntu VPS is not automatically a firewall or DNS problem. Start by copying the current RTMPS server URL from YouTube Studio, verify that your encoder supports RTMPS, and match your next check to the specific error. If those checks pass, test outbound connectivity and ask your VPS provider whether it restricts connections to the exact endpoint YouTube shows. YouTube does not document a universal India-specific firewall rule or DNS fix for this issue.
Start with the exact error, not a guessed fix
“RTMP connection error” can describe different failures. An SSL or certificate error points first to the secure URL and TLS connection; a timeout calls for checking the endpoint and encoder support; an encoder startup error can involve a stale stream key or encoder configuration. A timeout by itself does not prove that DNS failed or a firewall blocked the connection.

Copy the RTMPS URL from YouTube Studio

Open Stream settings. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions say to reveal the RTMPS URL using the lock icon; the default displayed URL may be ordinary RTMP.

Copy the secure RTMPS server URL exactly into your encoder. Check both the scheme and the server address. Do not substitute a hostname or path from an example or an old configuration; use the values shown for your stream.

If YouTube reports a persistent SSL error even though the URL appears correct, try specifying port 443 in the RTMPS URL or the encoder’s port setting. The hostname in YouTube’s example is illustrative, not a replacement for the endpoint in your Live Control Room.

See YouTube’s instructions for encrypting a stream with RTMPS. Port 443 is a specific troubleshooting suggestion for a persistent SSL error, not proof that every failed connection is caused by a blocked port.

Check the encoder and stream key
Confirm RTMPS support
For a timeout, YouTube advises verifying the server URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. Check the encoder’s documentation and update it if needed. An encoder that only supports ordinary RTMP cannot send to an RTMPS endpoint as configured.
Refresh the stream key if startup fails
Copy the current stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder, especially if the key was changed or the stream was set up again. YouTube describes a stream key as the password and address for the stream: keep it private, and do not paste it into public support posts, logs, or screenshots. Follow YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.

Test outbound connectivity, firewall rules, and DNS
Check the VPS firewall and provider policy
First identify which controls apply to your instance: a host firewall configured inside Ubuntu, a provider firewall or security group, or both. Review the active rules in the provider’s own control panel and the configuration you actually use on the server. Then ask the host whether outbound connections to the exact RTMPS endpoint copied from YouTube are restricted, and what settings it requires.
There is no provider-independent Ubuntu command or universal egress rule established for this error. Avoid applying firewall commands copied from an unrelated VPS guide: the correct change depends on your Ubuntu setup and provider. Do not disable a firewall wholesale as a diagnostic shortcut. If you change a rule, make it narrowly scoped, retain your administrative access, and test the stream again.

If you suspect DNS, check whether the exact hostname shown in Live Control Room resolves from the VPS, using the resolver and tools available on your system. Compare the result with your provider’s network guidance or ask its support team to investigate. This is general network diagnosis, not a YouTube-prescribed DNS repair: the available YouTube troubleshooting guidance does not establish a special DNS server, a universal resolver change, or a DNS-specific fix for this error.

Test the outbound path and upload capacity
If the encoder configuration looks correct, YouTube recommends testing the outbound internet connection. Also check whether the VPS has enough upload capacity for the stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, counting the primary and backup stream bitrates where applicable. Its streaming tips explain the recommendation. A speed result alone does not identify whether a provider firewall, route, DNS resolution, or encoder setting is responsible; use the result with the provider’s network information.

Once the endpoint, key, and network path have been checked, verify that the encoder’s output is compatible with YouTube. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as streaming protocols, H.264, H.265, and AV1 as common video codecs, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR encoding. Match the encoder to YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance; test before an important stream and monitor stream health. A codec or bitrate issue is a separate possibility from a connection timeout, so changing media quality is not a substitute for checking the endpoint and outbound path.
When to contact the VPS provider
Contact the provider after confirming the URL, RTMPS support, and current stream key. Give support the time of the failed attempt, the exact error text, the destination hostname and port from YouTube, and the result of your outbound connectivity checks. Never send the stream key. Ask whether outbound traffic to that destination is filtered and whether there are instance-level firewall or routing controls to inspect.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the outbound connection and escalating network issues to the relevant internet or hosting provider. See its troubleshooting page and streaming tips. Consider changing VPS providers only if you confirm a host-side restriction and decide its support or network options do not meet your needs.
