A “connection refused” error does not, by itself, prove that an Indian firewall is blocking YouTube. Check the Stream URL and protocol copied from YouTube Live Control Room, confirm your encoder supports RTMPS, verify the stream key, then inspect outbound TCP rules on both the Linux server and its cloud or hosting provider. YouTube’s port 443 suggestion applies specifically to an SSL error with RTMPS—not as a blanket instruction to open inbound port 443.
Work through the connection checks in order
Keep the checks separate: the endpoint, encoder, stream key and outbound network path can each fail independently. Start with the exact error text from the encoder; YouTube’s documented checks associate URL and RTMPS-support checks with timeouts, and port 443 with SSL errors. Its troubleshooting pages do not assign “connection refused” one definitive cause.
-
Copy the current Stream URL from YouTube
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and copy the actual Stream URL. Do not guess a hostname, regional ingest endpoint or port. YouTube may display the ordinary RTMP URL by default; to retrieve the RTMPS URL, use the lock control. If you select RTMPS, make sure the URL itself uses the
rtmpsprotocol. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. -
Confirm the encoder supports the selected protocol
If the encoder times out while connecting to RTMPS, YouTube recommends checking that the URL is correct and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Update the encoder if needed, then retry with the copied URL. A correct stream key cannot compensate for an unsupported protocol or incorrect endpoint. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps cover these checks.

-
Use port 443 only for the matching SSL symptom
For an SSL certificate error, YouTube says to verify the RTMPS URL and try specifying port 443. Use the host and path from your own Live Control Room URL; YouTube’s example hostname and path are illustrative, not a replacement endpoint. In this setup, the encoder initiates a connection to a remote destination. This is not a general instruction to expose an inbound service on TCP port 443 on your Linux server. See YouTube’s guidance for RTMPS SSL errors.
-
Replace the stream key if YouTube reports a startup error
For encoder startup errors, YouTube recommends copying a new stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Treat the key as secret: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Never include it in a support request, screenshot or public log. See YouTube’s stream-settings documentation.

Check the Linux host’s outbound firewall
Identify which firewall is active and whether it permits outbound TCP connections to the host and port in the current Stream URL. Do not assume that an inbound rule is the fix: the encoder’s connection originates from the server. Ubuntu’s firewall documentation explains that UFW can filter outbound traffic and distinguishes host traffic from routed traffic.
- If you use UFW: inspect its status and rules, including outbound policy. UFW supports explicit outbound rules; allow only the destination and port your copied URL requires, in line with your server’s policy.
- If you use firewalld: check which zone is active and whether the relevant change is runtime-only or permanent. Ubuntu’s firewall guidance covers the distinction between runtime and permanent configuration.
Do not add a broad inbound rule as a substitute for permitting the server-originated connection.

Check the provider’s egress controls and network path
Cloud firewalls, hosting-provider policies or an ISP can restrict outbound traffic independently of the Linux host. Compare DNS resolution and TCP reachability for the host and port in the current URL, inspect relevant firewall logs and provider egress settings, and—if practical—try the same encoder from another network. These comparisons help locate the failing layer; they are diagnostic checks, not a YouTube-prescribed test procedure. A refusal message alone cannot identify whether the cause is the host, an upstream network or the endpoint.
What the India context does—and does not—tell you
The server’s location makes its data-center route, ISP and provider egress policy worth checking. But the cited YouTube guidance and Ubuntu firewall documentation do not establish an India-only ingest host, port or general block. Do not attribute one server’s failure to Indian network policy without evidence from that server’s route or provider.

After the encoder connects: diagnose stability separately
A successful TCP connection is not the same as a stable live stream. For quality and dropouts after connection, YouTube recommends RTMPS, reliable upload bandwidth and leaving bandwidth headroom. Those recommendations concern stream health; they do not establish why an initial TCP connection was refused. See YouTube’s connection guidance and encoder settings and recommendations.

| Symptom | First checks | What the symptom does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS timeout | Confirm the copied RTMPS URL and check encoder RTMPS support; update the encoder if needed. | It does not by itself identify a firewall as the cause. |
| SSL certificate error | Verify the RTMPS URL; YouTube suggests trying destination port 443. | It is not a general reason to open inbound port 443 on the server. |
| Encoder startup error | Copy a fresh stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. | It does not prove the network path is the problem. |
| “Connection refused” | Check the actual endpoint and port, host outbound policy, provider egress controls and network path. | YouTube’s cited pages do not assign this exact message one definitive cause. |
What to collect before asking for server-specific help
- The exact, non-secret error text and when it occurs.
- The sanitized Stream URL hostname and port, with its path or sensitive parts removed as appropriate.
- The Linux distribution, active firewall and relevant status or rules.
- The encoder name and version, plus whether it supports the selected protocol.
- Any applicable cloud, hosting-provider or ISP egress policy.
Never share the stream key. These details help distinguish an endpoint or encoder issue from a host firewall or upstream restriction; without them, the available information cannot diagnose a particular server.
