If YouTube stopped receiving your stream immediately after a cloud firewall change, check the changed outbound network policy—but treat it as a leading clue, not a proven cause. First verify the ingest URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm your encoder supports RTMPS, then test outbound connectivity from the cloud host. The precise firewall rule depends on your cloud provider and configuration.
Start with the YouTube ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the server URL and stream key associated with the stream you are trying to send.
- Check that the URL is the RTMPS URL, not the ordinary RTMP URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Confirm the encoder is using that exact URL and the corresponding stream key. A valid key paired with the wrong ingest URL, or a URL paired with a different stream’s key, can prevent the intended connection.
Do not assume that a firewall change proves YouTube’s endpoint or the stream key is at fault. Establish the URL, protocol, and key first so the network investigation starts from a known configuration.
Confirm the encoder supports RTMPS
Check the encoder’s current version and its documentation or protocol settings for explicit RTMPS support. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the encoder must be able to establish that TLS/SSL connection; selecting an RTMPS URL alone does not add protocol support to an encoder that lacks it.
If the encoder reports an SSL error
With the correct RTMPS URL in place, YouTube’s SSL-error troubleshooting suggests specifying port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration. Treat this as a troubleshooting step for that error, not as proof that every YouTube endpoint or every cloud firewall must use only port 443. Test outbound connectivity and inspect the changed egress policy
A connection timeout means the encoder cannot complete a connection to the ingest service. YouTube’s guidance is to verify the server URL and RTMPS support; if the encoder’s output appears healthy, the outbound internet connection may be the problem. YouTube Help: encoder connection troubleshooting.
- From the cloud host, test whether it can make an outbound connection to the configured ingest endpoint using the protocol and port set in the encoder. Use your operating system’s available network-diagnostic tools, and distinguish a DNS or route failure from a refused or timed-out connection.
- Review the firewall or egress-policy change made immediately before the failure. Compare the previous and current rules for outbound access, destination restrictions, routing, and any network policy associated with the host.
- Check the provider’s own documentation or support for the exact rule syntax and behavior. The cloud provider, region, firewall product, and rule diff are not identified here, so there is no reliable provider-specific console path or universal rule to prescribe.
A timeout is consistent with an outbound connectivity issue, but does not identify which rule or network component is responsible. Avoid opening broad outbound access as a permanent fix; determine which policy changed and what traffic your configured ingest method requires.

Separate connection failures from bitrate instability
If the encoder connects but the stream drops, buffers, or becomes unstable, investigate bandwidth and connection reliability separately from the firewall. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
- Compare the encoder’s total outgoing bitrate with the cloud host’s available upload capacity.
- Keep the recommended 20% headroom instead of targeting the full available bandwidth.
- Check whether the host’s outbound connection is reliable over time; a successful initial connection does not establish stable capacity.
The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation for bitrate headroom, not a firewall-port requirement or a measured failure rate.

Consider HLS only when both ends are configured for it
YouTube documents HLS as an alternative ingest protocol, but it is relevant only if the encoder supports HLS and the YouTube stream configuration is set up for HLS. Confirm the required traffic is permitted by the actual network policy. Switching protocols is not a generic way to bypass an egress block. YouTube Help: HLS ingestion.

What to provide your cloud provider if the failure persists
Once the URL, key, encoder protocol support, and outbound test are verified, give the provider the relevant details so it can assess the actual policy rather than guess at a generic port fix:

- The time the stream last worked and when the firewall change was applied.
- The before-and-after egress rule details and the affected host or network.
- The ingest protocol and port configured in the encoder, plus whether the connection times out or reports an SSL error.
- The result of outbound connectivity checks and whether the encoder can otherwise reach the internet.
Because the provider and rule change are unspecified, only the operator or provider can establish which particular cloud rule is blocking the stream.
