Use the stream-specific server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room—not an old example address. If your encoder supports RTMPS, choose YouTube’s RTMPS URL and enter the stream key separately. YouTube’s reviewed documentation does not establish that its current ingest hosts are guaranteed to work over IPv6, so IPv6-only setups should test the exact hostname on their network rather than guess an address.
What is the YouTube RTMP ingest URL?
It is the server address your encoder uses to send video to YouTube Live. YouTube supplies the URL for the particular stream in Live Control Room. The stream key is a separate credential that identifies and authenticates the stream; it is not the server URL. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains where to find the stream URL and key.
Do not copy an address from an old tutorial and assume it is the right endpoint for a new stream. If you build your workflow through YouTube’s API, the stream resource provides ingestion fields for the stream instead. The LiveStreams API reference documents primary and backup ingestion addresses.
How to find and enter the URL
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Live Control Room and select an existing stream or schedule one.
- Copy the server URL from stream settings. YouTube may show the standard URL by default. Use the control to reveal the RTMPS URL if available and preferred.
- Set the encoder’s server or URL field. Choose a YouTube RTMPS preset if the encoder offers one. Otherwise paste the URL copied from YouTube into the server field.
- Enter the stream key in its own field. Follow the encoder’s field format: API-oriented tools may ask for the URL and stream name separately, or combine them as
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. - Start a test and check the preview. Confirm YouTube receives the video and audio before relying on the setup for an event. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it in screenshots. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. YouTube’s setup instructions describe entering the URL and key in the encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Should you use RTMP or RTMPS?
Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it and YouTube provides the RTMPS URL. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP transported securely through TLS: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube’s RTMPS help page shows how to reveal that URL.
If an RTMPS connection fails, check that the encoder is using the RTMPS URL—not the RTMP one—and that it connects on port 443. YouTube’s developer guide specifies the server hostname for TLS SNI (Server Name Indication), so do not replace it with a guessed numeric IP address. The RTMPS ingestion guide covers the TLS connection details.

Does YouTube RTMP work over IPv6?
The YouTube documentation cited here explains the ingest protocols, hostnames, TLS and encoder configuration, but does not promise that current RTMP or RTMPS ingest hosts work over IPv6. That is not proof that IPv6 is unsupported; it means universal IPv6 compatibility is not established by those sources. RTMP versus RTMPS is a protocol and security choice, while IPv4 versus IPv6 is a network-layer choice. YouTube does not document an IPv6-specific ingest URL format in the material cited here.
On an IPv6-only network, test the exact hostname YouTube gave you using the encoder and network you intend to use. DNS resolution, routing, encoder socket support, firewall rules and destination address availability can all affect whether it connects. For a definitive compatibility answer, ask YouTube or the encoder or network vendor. Avoid substituting a guessed IPv4 or IPv6 literal: with TLS, the expected hostname and SNI matter.

Primary and backup ingest URLs
If your workflow exposes a backup address, keep it separate from the primary address and use the one intended for that field. The YouTube API distinguishes primary and backup values for both RTMP and RTMPS: ingestionAddress, backupIngestionAddress, rtmpsIngestionAddress and rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. The encoder’s input format determines whether the stream URL and stream name go into separate fields or are joined. Refer to the LiveStreams API reference and your encoder’s documentation rather than treating the primary and backup addresses as interchangeable.
Encoder settings and preflight checks
The ingest URL gets the signal to YouTube; it does not by itself ensure a healthy stream. Set the rest of the encoder using YouTube’s current guidance for your intended resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder settings page covers protocol, codecs, frame rate, keyframes, audio and bitrate recommendations: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- Confirm the selected stream in Live Control Room is the one you mean to broadcast.
- Use the matching URL and protocol in the encoder, and keep the stream key in the key field.
- Check that the encoder’s video, audio and network settings align with YouTube’s current recommendations.
- Test with representative motion and audio, verify the preview, and monitor stream health during the event.
- For IPv6-only service, test reachability on the actual connection and encoder; a successful test on another network does not establish IPv6 support everywhere.
Common connection problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Encoder cannot connect over RTMPS | Use the RTMPS URL revealed in Live Control Room, verify the protocol is RTMPS and port 443 is permitted. Preserve YouTube’s hostname for TLS SNI. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm the encoder is using the URL for the selected stream and that the stream key is entered separately and correctly. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder. |
| Primary works but backup does not | Confirm the backup URL is entered in the encoder’s backup field and matches the selected protocol. API workflows provide distinct primary and backup fields. |
| IPv6-only setup cannot reach ingest | Test the supplied hostname on that network. Confirm DNS, routing, firewall policy and encoder IPv6 support; consult YouTube or the encoder/network vendor because the cited YouTube material does not establish universal IPv6 compatibility. |
| Connection works but stream health is poor | Check bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, codecs and audio against YouTube’s encoder guidance, then retest with representative content. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an encoder running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
