In the Stream settings, copy the Stream URL into your encoder’s server or RTMP server field, and copy the Stream key into its separate key field. YouTube shows the ordinary RTMP URL by default; to reveal the RTMPS URL, select the lock icon beside Stream URL.
Where to find the YouTube RTMP server URL and stream key
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- At the top right, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you want to use. If this is your first live stream, YouTube may ask you to edit the stream and create it; if you have streamed before, previous stream settings may load.
- In Stream settings, find Stream URL and Stream key. Copy each value separately.
The Stream URL is the server address your encoder sends video to. It is sometimes called the RTMP server URL or ingestion URL. The stream key identifies the stream to YouTube.
What to enter in your encoder
If your encoder offers a YouTube preset, select it and provide the stream key when prompted. Otherwise, enter the values in the corresponding fields:

Encoder labels vary, so match the purpose of each field rather than expecting identical wording. Do not paste the key into the server field or combine it with the URL unless your encoder explicitly asks for a combined value.

RTMP or RTMPS: which URL should you use?
YouTube displays ordinary RTMP by default. To reveal the secure RTMPS address, select the lock icon beside Stream URL. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; use it only if your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends checking encoder support if a connection times out.
Use the exact URL shown for your stream in Live Control Room. Do not substitute an example address from a help page. If an SSL certificate error continues after checking that you selected the RTMPS URL, YouTube suggests trying port 443.

Start a scheduled stream
- Save the URL and key in the matching encoder fields, then start the encoder.
- Wait for the incoming stream preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
- When ending the broadcast, use the Live Control Room controls and stop sending from the encoder as YouTube directs.
Keep your stream key private
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish one in a screenshot, article, or shared support message. If you think yours was exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; replace the saved key in your encoder with the new one.
Troubleshooting URL, key, and connection errors
- No preview or connection: Check that the full Stream URL is in the server field and the key is in the separate key field. Confirm that both values came from the stream you intend to use.
- SSL certificate error: Make sure the URL is the RTMPS address revealed with the lock icon, not the ordinary RTMP URL. If the URL is correct and the error persists, try port 443.
- Connection timeout: Recheck the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS if you selected the secure address.
- Bad-key error: Recopy the key for the selected stream. If it still fails or may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
