If your YouTube Live stream shows a health warning, first determine whether OBS is dropping frames because the network cannot sustain the stream, or whether OBS is overloaded rendering or encoding it. Those problems need different fixes: network drops call for checking upload capacity and connection stability; local overload calls for reducing the work the mini PC must do. Record the exact YouTube warning and OBS counters before changing settings, then test one change at a time.
Identify which kind of problem you have
A YouTube stream-health warning is not, by itself, enough to identify the cause. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not map every warning label to one universal remedy. Copy the exact message from YouTube Studio, then compare it with OBS’s own indicators.
- OBS dropped frames: OBS associates these with a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate the network and bitrate.
- Encoding lag, skipped frames, or an “encoding overloaded” message: Look for local rendering or encoding strain. Reduce the work the mini PC is doing.
- Viewers report buffering: This does not prove that the broadcaster is dropping frames. A viewer’s connection or playback device can cause buffering even when OBS reports no dropped frames.
Write down the literal YouTube message, OBS’s dropped-frame percentage and encoding or rendering counters, and whether viewers report buffering. Avoid changing resolution, bitrate, and encoder settings all at once: you need to know which change addresses the symptom.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance applies to the stream YouTube receives, not to a mini PC’s ability to produce it. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; it supports up to 60 fps. Audio should use AAC or MP3, and bitrate encoding should be CBR. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check the current [YouTube encoder settings guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) before an event, since published settings can change.

For common H.264 SDR streams, YouTube lists these ingest bitrate ranges:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not OBS presets, guaranteed image-quality outcomes, or mini-PC performance benchmarks. YouTube says it detects encoder settings and transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats. By default, it detects resolution and frame rate; a custom stream key allows manual stream-resolution settings.

If OBS is dropping frames, investigate the connection
OBS’s connection guide defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. A lower resolution will not necessarily fix an unstable connection, and changing encoder settings does not increase available upload capacity. Work through the connection before changing unrelated settings.
- Compare stream bitrate with sustained upload capacity. Download speed does not tell you whether the upload can carry the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused; its [streaming tips](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853856) also note that other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting troubleshooting heuristic. These are vendor heuristics, not a guarantee or a universal formula. If your stable upload cannot support the configured bitrate with headroom, lower the bitrate.
- Check other network use. Pause or account for large uploads, downloads, cloud backups, and other devices using the connection. Retest when the stream can get a steadier share of the available upload.
- Try wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unreliable. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable and recommends a wired connection. Ethernet helps only if wireless instability is relevant; it cannot increase your ISP’s upload capacity or fix a local encoding bottleneck.
- Check the network path and software. If drops continue, investigate the router or modem, cable path, network drivers, VPN or security software, and network-prioritization software. Change one factor and retest so the result is interpretable.
If OBS is overloaded, reduce local rendering and encoding work
A low-power mini PC may struggle with the actual workload even when its network connection is fine. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance recommends freeing resources and reducing output demands. Rendering the scene also uses GPU resources, so the issue may not be the encoder setting alone. OBS’s advice is to reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes, and reduce expensive filters or browser sources. Close GPU-heavy programs you do not need.

If the current stream is 60 fps, testing 30 fps is a reasonable next step. You can also try 720p30 or 1080p30 before 60 fps: both require fewer frames per second than their 60 fps counterparts, and 720p30 has fewer pixels to process than 1080p30. This is a troubleshooting sequence, not a guarantee for any unspecified mini PC. The result depends on the scene’s complexity and the CPU, GPU, operating system, available hardware encoder, and OBS configuration.
- Record the current OBS dropped-frame and encoding or rendering counters.
- Reduce one source of local work—for example, simplify the scene or remove an expensive filter—and run a short test.
- If overload remains, reduce output resolution or frame rate, then compare counters and stream quality again.
- Choose an encoder only after confirming what the mini PC and its OBS setup actually support. Do not assume a hardware encoder is available, and do not apply a universal preset to unknown hardware.
Lowering bitrate may reduce network demand but can reduce delivered image quality; lowering resolution or frame rate reduces the output workload. Choose the adjustment that matches the symptom rather than treating those controls as interchangeable.

Run a representative test before the event
Test with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. A static desktop scene does not reveal how the system will handle a game scene with motion, overlays, browser sources, or filters. YouTube’s [live-streaming tips](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853856) advise testing, checking the preview before starting, monitoring stream health, and continuing to watch audio and video quality.
- Capture a short test using the intended scene, audio, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that audio is present and the picture looks right.
- Compare OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding or rendering counters with your notes.
- Read the exact YouTube stream-health message. If the problem persists, make one change in the relevant category—network delivery or local workload—and test again.
- During the event, keep monitoring OBS, YouTube’s health messages, and the audio and video output.
