Mixed-frame-rate source videos are not a proven cause of YouTube RTMP stream health warnings. YouTube’s guidance concerns the stream your encoder sends—its codec, output frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval—while OBS documents network drops and local rendering or encoding strain as separate problems. Capture the exact warning, check encoder statistics, then test one change at a time before blaming the playlist.
What a YouTube stream health warning tells you
YouTube checks the incoming stream in Live Control Room and displays errors alongside the Health Indicator. Start with the warning’s exact wording and timestamp: YouTube says errors include timestamps and can remain while unresolved. Red indicates a critical error; yellow indicates a moderate one. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
A warning about codec, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe frequency points to the incoming stream configuration. OBS network dropped-frame statistics point instead to delivery over the connection; rendering or encoding strain points to the computer’s workload. These are different stages, so do not assume that a warning and a choppy viewer experience have the same cause.
Are mixed-frame-rate videos the cause?
The reviewed YouTube and OBS guidance does not specify a required source-file frame rate for a looped playlist, nor does it say mixed-frame-rate clips inherently trigger ingest warnings. YouTube’s published requirements describe the outgoing stream; OBS’s troubleshooting guidance covers network and computer performance. The connection between mixed source frame rates and a warning is therefore a hypothesis to test, not an established platform rule.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A playlist with varied source frame rates is still useful to include in a representative test. Keep the outgoing settings stable, record the warning and encoder statistics, and compare results with a consistently framed or normalized version only if the first checks do not reveal a concrete output or performance problem.
Check the outgoing RTMP settings first
YouTube recommends letting Live Control Room detect resolution and frame rate automatically unless you have a reason to use a custom stream key with manual settings. Its current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports output up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Use the settings appropriate to your encoder and stream key.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Codec and format: Match a supported codec and the stream settings selected in YouTube. The error guide includes incorrect format or codec, interlaced video, and resolution mismatch among documented error types.
- Output frame rate: Confirm the encoder’s outgoing rate is within the configured maximum. YouTube identifies frame rate above that maximum as a possible error.
- Bitrate: Compare your bitrate against YouTube’s table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. There is no single bitrate recommendation for every stream. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; for 1080p at 60 fps it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of delivery quality.
- Keyframes and GOP: Use a two-second interval as YouTube’s recommendation and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s error guidance illustrates that a 30 fps stream should send a keyframe every 60 frames. It also says frame rate and keyframe frequency are linked, ingestion errors can affect GOP size, and a closed GOP is needed for optimal transcoding.
- Other video properties: YouTube recommends progressive scan and describes square pixels and Rec. 709 for SDR among advanced settings. Check the full settings page for the codec and resolution you use.
Change a confirmed mismatch in the encoder or stream-key configuration, then recheck Live Control Room. Do not adjust source clips to solve an explicit keyframe, codec, or output-resolution warning before checking those outgoing settings.
Diagnose dropped frames versus rendering or encoding lag
If OBS reports network dropped frames
OBS attributes network drops to an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its stream connection troubleshooting guide recommends wired connectivity and lists faulty cables, routers, and network cards as possible hardware issues. Check that the connection can sustain the stream bitrate; test a wired connection if you are on Wi-Fi, and inspect the network path if drops continue. A cable or router fix will not correct a wrong codec, GOP, or output frame rate.

If OBS struggles to render or encode
OBS identifies GPU workload, output frame rate and resolution, scene complexity, sources, and filters as factors in rendering or encoding performance. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide advises reducing output frame rate or resolution if needed. Those changes reduce workload but trade away motion smoothness or image detail. Compare OBS’s local performance statistics before changing the playlist.
Run a controlled test of the mixed-frame-rate loop
- Record the baseline. Note the exact Live Control Room warning and timestamp, the outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval, plus OBS network and performance statistics.
- Use a representative test. Include the same loop and audio, and stream for a comparable duration. YouTube says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Keep output settings fixed. First verify the selected settings against YouTube’s guidance. Then avoid changing multiple encoder settings while testing the source-frame-rate question.
- Change one relevant input variable. Compare the original loop with a consistently framed or normalized export, leaving the output settings, audio, and test conditions unchanged. This is a diagnostic suggestion, not a YouTube requirement.
- Compare outcomes. Check whether the same warning recurs and whether OBS’s network drops or rendering/encoding indicators change. A warning that persists with stable local and network statistics still needs to be interpreted by its exact wording; do not infer a source-frame-rate cause from correlation alone.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| “Incorrect video keyframe frequency” or GOP-related warning | Outgoing keyframe interval, frame rate, and GOP behavior | Use YouTube’s recommended two-second interval, within its four-second maximum; check that the encoder sends the intended output frame rate and a closed GOP. |
| Codec, format, interlacing, or resolution warning | Encoder output and selected Live Control Room stream settings | Match the supported codec and configured resolution; use progressive output where appropriate. |
| OBS network dropped frames | Connection stability and whether the connection sustains the configured bitrate | Try wired connectivity and investigate cables, router, or network adapter if drops persist. |
| Choppy output with rendering or encoding strain | GPU headroom, frame rate, resolution, scenes, sources, and filters | Reduce workload, for example by lowering output frame rate or resolution, understanding the quality trade-off. |
| Warning appears only with the mixed-rate loop | Repeatable tests with the exact same output settings and one source change | Compare against a consistently framed export and check the warning timestamp and encoder statistics. Treat any apparent connection as a test result for that setup, not a general YouTube rule. |
