If your encoder says the RTMP stream has started but viewers in India see “offline,” first check whether YouTube is receiving the feed and whether the stream’s watch page has actually been made live. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect stream health and its specific status or error, confirm the preview appears, and—if this is a scheduled stream—select Go live when prompted. Then check the encoder’s output, the outbound upload connection, and whether the problem affects viewers on different devices and networks. The symptom alone does not establish an India-specific cause.
First determine where the stream is failing
An encoder’s “started” or “live” indicator confirms only what the encoder reports about its own connection and output. It does not by itself prove that YouTube has received a usable feed, that a scheduled event has been published, or that viewers can open the watch page. Work from YouTube’s status message outward instead of changing settings at random.

Check Live Control Room and the watch page
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the event you intend to broadcast. Read the stream-health status and any associated error details; use that message to choose the next check.
- Wait for the incoming preview. If it does not appear, investigate the feed and ingest before treating the event as a viewer-only playback issue.
- If the event is scheduled, follow the Live Control Room flow and select Go live after the preview is available. An encoder can be sending video while a scheduled event still awaits this publication action.
- Open the channel or event watch page as a viewer, including on a mobile device, to confirm the event is accessible. A successful encoder connection is not a substitute for checking the published page.
Verify the encoder destination and stream key
In Live Control Room, compare the current server URL and stream key with the encoder’s destination fields. Check that the encoder is pointed at the intended YouTube event and that the key has not been mistyped or replaced with a different one.
If the third-party encoder reports an error starting or connecting, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Do not reset or replace a key reflexively when the encoder already reports success: a key change is relevant when the configuration or connection error points to it, not as a universal fix for an unpublished event or a viewer playback problem.

Inspect what the encoder is actually producing
- Check the encoder’s own video and audio meters, output status, and any error or dropped-frame indicators.
- Update the encoder to its latest available version before testing again.
- Check CPU load. A machine under heavy load can fail to produce a stable feed even while the encoder interface remains open.
- If you are recording locally as well, inspect the recording or archive. It can help distinguish a faulty source or encoding output from an ingest or publication problem.
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. A static screen or silent test may not expose problems that occur during the actual program.
If the local output looks and sounds defective, resolve that before investigating the network. If it looks healthy, move on to the outbound connection.
Measure upload capacity and stability
Test upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. Include primary and backup stream bitrates when calculating the connection capacity you need, and account for other people or devices sharing the network. A speed result from an otherwise idle connection may not reflect what is available while the stream is running.

If the upload path seems unstable, try a wired Ethernet connection as a diagnostic comparison. A wired test can help isolate a Wi-Fi or local-network issue; it is not a guaranteed fix for a scheduled event that was never published, an incorrect key, or a problem at the viewer’s end.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings when evidence points to ingest
Only change encoding settings when the preview, stream-health status, or encoder output points to an ingest or format issue. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds with a maximum of 4 seconds. YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Match the settings to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are actually sending; a bitrate recommendation for one format is not automatically right for another.

These are YouTube Help recommendations, not measurements of the failing stream. Consult YouTube’s current settings table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the encoder’s input format is not the same as the final playback format on every device.
Check whether the problem is stream-wide or viewer-side
Ask affected viewers to report whether the watch page loads, whether playback works on another device, and whether the result changes on a different connection. Compare reports from people using different providers or networks, not just several devices on the same Wi-Fi. YouTube notes that similar errors from many viewers on different connections can indicate an encoder issue; playback can also be affected by viewer-device or network congestion.

A viewer being in India is useful context, but location alone does not diagnose an encoder, ISP, routing, account, or availability problem. The official YouTube guidance reviewed for this symptom does not establish a distinct India-specific cause or report how often this exact failure occurs.
