First, check what “encoder password” means. If you changed or reset the YouTube stream key, copy the current key from YouTube Studio and replace the old one in your encoder. If you changed your Google account password, the stream key is a separate credential; follow the encoder’s sign-in or re-authentication prompt if it asks. Then verify the server URL and the encoder’s connection status.
Identify which password changed
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings help. That does not make the key interchangeable with your Google account password.
- You changed the stream key in YouTube Studio: update the key saved in the encoder. A reset key must be copied into the encoder before it can send a feed using that key.
- You changed your Google account password: if the encoder connects through a YouTube sign-in rather than a manually entered key, use its re-authentication flow if requested and confirm it is connected to the intended channel. YouTube directs users with account-login issues in third-party streaming software to the software provider. Its guidance does not establish that changing a Google password always invalidates every encoder connection.
Replace a changed YouTube stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab in Live Control Room.
- Copy the current stream key. YouTube’s instructions for a third-party encoder startup error are to copy the key from Studio, paste it into the encoder, and start the encoder.
- In the encoder’s YouTube or streaming settings, replace the saved key with the current one. Check that the server URL is the intended YouTube URL; do not change other settings unless you have a reason to.
- Start the encoder and check whether YouTube receives the feed in Live Control Room.
Treat the stream key as sensitive: it lets the encoder send a feed to the selected stream. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or support posts.
If you changed your Google account password
For an encoder that signs in to YouTube rather than asking you to enter a stream key, reconnect only if the encoder requests it or its documentation directs you to do so. Complete that encoder’s sign-in or re-authentication steps and verify the selected channel. The exact steps vary by software; if the connection still fails, consult the encoder provider’s support rather than assuming the stream key was reset.

Check the encoder and network if it still stops
- Update the encoder. Check for an available update and review its startup status.
- Inspect the local preview and errors. Confirm the picture and sound appear as expected, then read the encoder’s error message or log for connection details.
- Check the computer and outbound connection. Look at CPU load and test the internet connection sending the feed to YouTube. A healthy local preview does not by itself confirm that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
- Test another encoder if the problem persists. YouTube suggests trying a different encoder or reporting the problem when the usual checks do not resolve it.
Fix RTMPS URL, protocol, or SSL errors
If the encoder reports an RTMPS connection, timeout, or SSL error, compare its server URL with the one shown in Live Control Room. Make sure it uses rtmps rather than rtmp when the selected YouTube endpoint is RTMPS, and confirm the encoder supports RTMPS. For SSL errors, YouTube suggests trying port 443.
