The overnight playlist itself is not an established cause: the official guidance reviewed does not specify a special timeout rule for overnight playlists.
First identify when the timeout happens
People often call any YouTube ingest failure an “RTMP timeout,” but YouTube recommends RTMPS, and the same symptom can come from a wrong endpoint, unstable connection, or encoder trouble. Start with the exact error and timing rather than treating every failure as a stream-key problem.
- Before the stream connects: If OBS says “failed to connect to server — connection timed out,” verify the current server URL, protocol, stream key, and encoder’s RTMPS support.
- After the stream has begun: If OBS is disconnecting and reconnecting or reports dropped frames, check the connection to the ingest server, stable upload capacity, encoder status, and YouTube stream health.
Keep the OBS log and note whether YouTube’s Live Control Room sees incoming data, reports an encoder error, or shows a stream-health warning. That evidence helps distinguish a connection failure from a problem producing or encoding the video.
Fix a timeout before OBS connects
Copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live to reach the Live Control Room, then open Stream settings.
- Reveal or copy the current stream key and copy the server URL shown there. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; select or reveal the RTMPS URL when available.
- Paste the server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in OBS, checking for missing characters, extra spaces, or an old saved endpoint.
- Confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s instruction is explicit: “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
If the address and key look correct but OBS reports an SSL error, YouTube suggests specifying port 443. Use the current endpoint details in Studio and the encoder’s documented way to set the port; do not substitute an arbitrary server address.

Update OBS and inspect its status
YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Update OBS from its official distribution channel, then check its preview, displayed errors, CPU load, and log. If the preview or local recording is already corrupted or stuttering, solve that production or encoding issue before treating the problem as an ingest timeout.
Fix a stream that connects and later drops
Check dropped frames and stream health
OBS says intermittent disconnections and dropped frames usually point to an unstable connection between the computer and the ingest server or a bitrate beyond what the connection can reliably sustain. Too many dropped frames can lead to disconnection. Compare OBS’s status and log with YouTube’s stream-health information; a stream key change is not the first remedy when the stream already connected.

Choose a bitrate for stable upload capacity
Run an upload test, but treat its result as a starting measurement rather than proof that the connection can sustain a stream all night. YouTube recommends matching quality to upload bitrate, testing with similar audio and movement, and monitoring stream health during the event. Its published H.264 recommendations include:

These are YouTube’s published configuration values, not reliability statistics or a promise that a connection will remain stable. Choose the row for your actual resolution and frame rate, and leave capacity for network variation. YouTube also recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance before going live, since settings can change.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate selection. That is an OBS rule of thumb, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of overnight stability. OBS’s guide is dated 2024-09-30: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Test OBS network options one at a time
On Windows, open OBS → Settings → Advanced → Network and test the following without changing several options at once:

- Enable Network Optimizations and TCP pacing, then test the stream.
- Keep Bind to IP set to Default.
- Try IPv4-only as a diagnostic. If it does not help, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
- Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce image quality.
These are troubleshooting tests, not settings that guarantee a long-running stream will stay connected.
Check Wi-Fi, security software, drivers, and network hardware
- Wi-Fi: OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends wired Ethernet. If the PC is currently on Wi-Fi and can reach the router by cable, test a wired connection. A cable cannot correct a bad RTMPS URL or key, an ISP outage, or an encoder fault.
- VPN, firewall, and antivirus: These can interfere with OBS’s connection. Temporarily test a suspected program only if you can do so safely; restore protection afterward. If evidence points to it, add an OBS exception rather than leaving security disabled.
- Network utilities and drivers: Network “optimization” software and outdated network drivers are possible causes. Disable or update a suspected utility and update the network adapter driver through a trusted source.
- Physical network path: Restart the modem and router and check cables, network cards, switches, and extenders. If the outbound connection remains unreliable, contact your ISP.

Rehearse before leaving the playlist unattended
- Use the same playlist, OBS version, output settings, PC, and network path planned for the overnight stream.
- Run a representative test with similar audio and movement. Verify that OBS stays connected and that YouTube’s Live Control Room shows incoming data and acceptable stream health.
- Check the intended event’s stream settings and auto-start or auto-stop behavior in Studio.
- Keep a way to monitor or receive alerts available while the playlist runs unattended.
No setting in the cited YouTube or OBS guidance prevents every long-run drop, and those sources do not specify a timeout policy for overnight playlists. Treat an overnight run as a reason to rehearse and monitor, not as evidence of a special YouTube rule.
