Contabo describes its network firewall as filtering inbound traffic while leaving outbound traffic unrestricted, so that firewall alone does not establish why an outbound RTMPS connection fails. The available information does not identify a Contabo India-specific restriction or the cause on any particular VPS.
What an RTMPS handshake failure means
YouTube RTMPS is RTMP carried through TLS. Before YouTube can receive the stream, the client must reach the correct ingestion endpoint and complete the TLS negotiation. The connection uses port 443, and TLS authentication requires the client to send the server hostname in the Server Name Indication (SNI) extension. Connecting to an IP address without the correct SNI, using the wrong hostname or path, or attempting cleartext RTMP instead can prevent the handshake. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide describes these requirements.
A handshake failure is earlier than encoding or stream-health problems. Bitrate, keyframes, codecs, and encoder load matter after a connection is established; they do not repair a TLS negotiation that never completes.
Check the endpoint and stream key in YouTube
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and go to the stream settings.
- Copy the RTMPS URL provided there, not a default RTMP URL. Preserve the exact hostname and path; do not substitute an IP address or guess a URL.
- Use the current stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat it as a password: do not paste it into logs, screenshots, public posts, or provider support requests.
- Confirm that the encoder or streaming client supports RTMPS and is configured to use the copied URL. YouTube’s guidance is to enable RTMPS in the encoder and use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions.
Verify TLS, port 443, and SNI
Check the client’s connection settings and diagnostic output. It should open TCP to the supplied hostname on port 443, establish TLS rather than plain RTMP, validate the certificate, and send the same hostname as SNI. A successful TCP connection only shows that a socket opened; it does not confirm TLS authentication, the RTMP path, the stream key, or acceptance of the ingest session.

If the error mentions an invalid SSL certificate or certificate validation, confirm the hostname and port first. Then inspect whether the client validates the certificate chain, whether the VPS clock is correct, and whether the TLS client is sending SNI. Avoid disabling certificate verification as a fix: that removes an important security check without correcting the endpoint mismatch. YouTube specifically calls out the RTMPS server selection, port 443, SSL handling, and SNI in its connection requirements.
Test DNS and reachability from the VPS
Run diagnostics on the affected VPS, not only on a desktop or a different server. First resolve the exact hostname copied from Live Control Room, then test TCP 443 and perform a TLS connection test that supplies that hostname as SNI. The results help separate a DNS or TCP timeout from a TLS or certificate failure. They do not, by themselves, prove that YouTube will accept the stream key or RTMP session.

- DNS does not resolve: check the VPS resolver configuration and whether DNS requests are allowed by the guest firewall.
- TCP 443 times out or is refused: investigate guest outbound rules, the local route, and reachability to the endpoint.
- TCP connects but TLS fails: check the hostname, SNI, certificate validation, clock, and TLS client.
- TLS succeeds but the encoder fails: check its RTMPS URL parsing, protocol support, SNI behavior, TLS library, and version.
Record the test time, resolved addresses, command output, and the exact error text. These are diagnostic steps based on YouTube’s published connection requirements; no test of a particular Contabo VPS is established here.
Inspect the guest firewall and route
Check the firewall inside the VPS for outbound TCP 443 and DNS rules, as well as its default outbound policy. Depending on the operating system, this may mean reviewing UFW, nftables or iptables, Windows Defender Firewall, or another local security policy. Also review the routing table for the destination and check whether a local network policy or tunnel changes the route.

Contabo’s documentation distinguishes its network firewall from an operating-system firewall: its published VPS/VDS firewall description says the network firewall filters incoming connections and leaves outgoing traffic unrestricted, while guest-level firewall rules can control outbound traffic. Therefore, opening inbound ports is not the appropriate first response to a connection initiated by the VPS. See Contabo’s firewall explanation and OS-level firewall guidance.
Use the error to choose the next check

If the connection succeeds, troubleshoot stream health separately
Once YouTube receives the stream, use Live Control Room’s stream health indicators and encoder output to investigate video or audio problems. Check that the encoder is keeping up, that the selected codec and stream settings are supported, and that the VPS has enough available outbound capacity. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload capacity above the stream bitrate, counting both primary and backup streams; this is YouTube guidance, not a measured limit for Contabo. For a stream that does reach YouTube, separately review YouTube’s live-stream policies and your rights to the material. A successful handshake does not establish permission to stream copyrighted material or guarantee that a channel’s content complies with YouTube rules.

Escalate to Contabo if DNS and guest egress checks do not explain a repeatable TCP timeout, or if route diagnostics point beyond the VPS. Include the source VPS location, timestamp and time zone, destination hostname and resolved IP, TCP 443 test results, and traceroute or MTR output. Contabo recommends providing traceroute/MTR information when investigating suspected infrastructure connectivity issues; see its connectivity guidance.

Contact the encoder vendor if a correctly SNI-configured TLS test succeeds but that encoder still fails. Provide the encoder name and version, sanitized URL details, and exact error. Never disclose the stream key. No available evidence confirms an India-specific block or identifies the cause on an individual VPS; location is context for an investigation, not proof of the fault.
