A running FFmpeg process does not prove YouTube is still receiving your stream. Check the Live Control Room and FFmpeg’s output, then verify the stream key and RTMP/RTMPS destination before investigating encoder health and your outbound connection. The message alone does not identify one cause.
What “encoder disconnected” means
YouTube’s status describes whether it is receiving data from your encoder, not merely whether FFmpeg is still running locally. A process can remain alive even if it cannot deliver stream data. Compare the stream state and any warnings in YouTube’s Live Control Room with FFmpeg’s current output and error log. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation are useful references.
Troubleshoot in order
- Check YouTube’s receipt status. Open the stream in Live Control Room and look for its state and encoder warnings. Compare those with FFmpeg’s output and error log. A live process by itself is not proof that YouTube is receiving data.
- Verify the server URL and stream key. Confirm that FFmpeg is configured with the current YouTube server URL and the key shown in Live Control Room. For a third-party encoder startup error, YouTube recommends getting the key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Do not share the key in screenshots or logs.
- Read FFmpeg’s errors and check the protocol settings. Look for failed writes, a closed connection, key or authentication rejection, and TLS/SSL errors. Compare the configured URL and port with the destination you intend to use. YouTube explains that RTMPS is RTMP tunneled through SSL; if the URL seems correct but an SSL error appears, check whether the port is wrong in its RTMPS guidance. The symptom alone does not justify adding a particular FFmpeg flag.
- Check local encoder health. YouTube recommends using a current encoder version and checking the local stream’s picture and sound, dashboard encoder errors, and encoder CPU load. If available, inspect a local recording too. Bad or missing local output points toward sources or encoding load rather than proving a network fault.
- Investigate the outbound connection. If local output looks healthy but YouTube is not receiving the stream, test the stability of the computer’s connection to the internet. OBS explains that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; excessive drops may disconnect a stream. Its connection troubleshooting guide describes these symptoms. Testing over Ethernet can help isolate a local Wi-Fi problem, but a wired connection cannot fix an ISP or YouTube ingest problem.
- Escalate based on what the checks show. YouTube recommends contacting your ISP if connection testing reveals problems. If its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, report the problem to YouTube.
Use the evidence to narrow down the cause
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Live Control Room reports no incoming stream, while FFmpeg is still running | Read FFmpeg’s output and errors, then verify the URL and key. |
| FFmpeg reports key, authentication, or connection errors | Check the current key in Live Control Room and the configured destination; avoid exposing the key while troubleshooting. |
| An SSL/TLS error appears with an RTMPS destination | Check the RTMPS URL and port against YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. |
| Local picture or sound is bad, or encoder CPU load is high | Investigate sources, encoding load, and encoder version before attributing the fault to the network. |
| Local output looks healthy, but FFmpeg reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections | Test outbound connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate. |
When testing a different encoder or connection setup, compare the same things each time: whether YouTube receives a stable stream, whether local picture and sound remain good, encoder CPU load, dropped-frame and disconnection behavior, and whether YouTube accepts the exact destination and key. Without the FFmpeg command and errors, dashboard state, and network details, the specific root cause cannot be identified from the title alone.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than to debug this FFmpeg session, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
