If YouTube says “no data is being received,” first confirm that your encoder is sending to the active stream’s exact server URL and stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Then compare the encoder’s local output with YouTube’s preview: that tells you whether to investigate capture and encoding or the connection to YouTube. The message alone does not identify the cause.
Start with the stream URL and key
- Open the active stream in YouTube Studio. Go to Live Control Room and select the current stream. Check its Stream URL and Stream key against the destination server and key configured in OBS or your FFmpeg command. A key for a different event, an outdated key, or a mistyped URL can send the encoder to the wrong place. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guide advises getting a new key and updating the encoder when YouTube reports an error starting a third-party encoder.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Don’t include it in a screenshot, public log, or command you share. If it may be exposed or stale, obtain the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. If the preview receives video and audio, ingest is working; any remaining issue is more likely about the stream’s content or settings. If the encoder shows a healthy local picture but the preview remains empty, continue with protocol and network checks.
Find where the feed stops
OBS or FFmpeg shows no usable local output
Check that the intended video and audio sources are active, that the encoder is running, and that it reports no capture or encoding error. Inspect CPU load as well. A local recording can help separate a source or encoding failure from a problem sending the feed to YouTube. Use a current encoder version; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and its output.
Local output looks healthy, but YouTube receives nothing
Recheck the active event’s URL and key, then check the protocol and outbound network. Measure upload performance and compare the stable capacity—not just a brief peak—with the configured video and audio bitrate. A connection that cannot sustain the bitrate may drop frames or fail to deliver a usable feed.
YouTube preview receives the feed
Once data is arriving, review stream settings and the Live Control Room’s status messages. Don’t change bitrate or protocol at random: match settings to the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and ingest method.

Check RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS correctly
RTMP or recommended RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream sent to Google’s servers. Use the RTMP or RTMPS URL supplied for the active stream in Live Control Room; don’t guess an endpoint. If you see an SSL error or timeout, verify that the URL uses the intended protocol, confirm your encoder supports RTMPS, and check the port. YouTube’s protocol troubleshooting instructions include trying port 443 when required.
HLS is a separate setup, not a key fix
YouTube’s HLS ingest uses an HTTPS URL and has different segment and codec requirements from a continuous RTMP feed. It also has higher latency. Consider it only if the encoder and use case call for HLS; switching to HLS is not a general fix for a wrong RTMP URL or stream key. Follow YouTube’s separate HLS setup guidance if you deliberately use that protocol.

Verify YouTube’s ingest settings
These settings matter once the encoder is sending data. YouTube’s current live encoder settings specify the following for its RTMP/RTMPS guidance:
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, subject to encoder and protocol support.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: a two-second interval is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced recommendations include 128 kbps stereo AAC or MP3.
- Advanced video characteristics: square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
Selected H.264 recommended video bitrates from YouTube’s table, as published configuration recommendations rather than measured outcomes:

| Video mode | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
Those figures apply to the listed H.264 modes; YouTube lists different recommendations for other modes and for AV1 or H.265. Use the row matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one figure as universal. If the connection is unstable, a lower sustainable bitrate may be more useful than a higher target it cannot maintain.
OBS: diagnose dropped frames and connection settings
OBS distinguishes dropped frames from a local rendering or encoding failure: dropped frames indicate trouble between the computer and the remote ingest server, such as an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, says: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That statement is specifically about dropped frames; it does not mean OBS can never have other problems.

Try these diagnostics one at a time and undo changes that do not help. Menu labels may differ by OBS release and operating system; consult the current guide for your installation.
- Lower the video bitrate. Test a value the stable upload connection can sustain, then check whether dropped frames stop.
- Test a different ingest server where available. This can help determine whether the selected route or server is involved.
- Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi may be unstable. A wired connection is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed cure. Restarting the modem and router can also help test general connectivity.
- Check software and drivers that affect networking. VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, and outdated network drivers can interfere. If you briefly disable security software as a test, re-enable it afterward.
- Review OBS network options carefully. The guide includes Windows network optimizations/TCP pacing, Default Bind to IP, and testing IPv4-only with a reversion if it does not help. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can be a fallback, but may reduce video quality.
Replace network hardware only when there is evidence that a component is faulty. A cable or router change cannot correct a stale stream key or incorrect destination URL.

FFmpeg: what to check before changing the command
There is no single FFmpeg command-line correction that applies to every “no data” case. The right diagnosis depends on the actual command, FFmpeg version and build, destination protocol, and error output. Verify that the destination URL and credentials match the active Live Control Room stream, and confirm that the process is producing and sending video and audio. Compare local output with YouTube’s preview before changing encoding options.
If you ask for help, share the relevant command with the stream key redacted, the FFmpeg version/build, the protocol, and the error log around the failure. Don’t post a reusable key. YouTube’s guidance covers its URL, key, ingest protocols, and encoder settings, but does not prescribe a universal FFmpeg command for this symptom.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an encoder-start error | Key, destination, or encoder configuration | Confirm the active stream’s URL and key; obtain a fresh key if needed and update the encoder. |
| Local preview or recording is missing or faulty | Capture sources or local encoding | Check active sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and local output. |
| Local output is fine, but YouTube preview is empty | Credentials, protocol, or outbound connection | Verify URL/key and RTMP/RTMPS settings; test stable upload and network interference. |
| Dropped frames in OBS | Connection instability or unsustainable bitrate | Lower bitrate, test wired networking if Wi-Fi is suspect, and follow OBS’s connection checks. |
| RTMPS SSL error or timeout | Endpoint, protocol, port, or encoder support | Use the supplied URL, verify RTMPS support, and check whether port 443 is required. |
When to contact support
If the URL and key match, the local output is sound, and the connection appears stable but YouTube still receives nothing, preserve the encoder log with the key removed. Note the protocol and time of failure. Contact the encoder provider for encoder-specific errors; contact your internet provider when evidence points to an outbound connection problem. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance directs persistent encoder issues to the encoder provider and connection issues to the ISP.
