Use a different phone number that its owner agrees you may use to receive the code. Google’s official “Verify your account” help page gives that as the remedy for “This phone number has been used too many times for verification,” and says a family member’s or friend’s number may be used. Google does not publish the exact limit or a reset period for this error.
What the error means
The message means Google has limited how many times that phone number can be used for verification. Google says the limit is intended “to protect you from abuse.” It is a limit on use of the number for verification; the message alone does not tell you which earlier verification attempts counted or who made them.
Google’s public help article does not specify a numeric threshold, an annual allowance, or when the limit resets. Claims that every number can verify a set number of accounts per year are not established by that official guidance.
What to do
- Use another number. Google’s stated response to this exact error is to use a different number.
- Ask the number’s owner first. Google specifically says a family member’s or friend’s number may be used. Make sure they agree and can receive the verification code.
- Enter the code sent to that number to complete the verification step shown on your screen. Keep the number’s owner informed; do not use someone else’s number without permission.
The Google help page does not promise that waiting a particular number of hours or days will remove the limit. It also does not identify repeated retries, changing devices, buying a SIM, or using a virtual number as a fix for this error.

Check which message you received
“This phone number has been used too many times for verification” is not the same wording as “This phone number cannot be used for verification.” Google’s help page addresses both with the recommendation to try a different number. If your screen shows the latter message, do not assume the cause is a usage limit; the wording does not establish that.
Why a number you just got might be affected
A number may have been used before its current owner received it. A Google Account Help Community Product Expert has mentioned number recycling as a possible explanation, but that is community commentary, not an official diagnosis of why a particular number was rejected. Google’s public guidance does not identify the prior use, if any, behind an individual error.

What not to rely on
- An exact quota: Google’s official article does not state how many accounts or verification events are allowed per number. Specific quota claims in community discussions are not confirmed policy.
- A guaranteed waiting period: The article gives no reset timetable, so waiting a fixed interval is not a documented remedy.
- Repeated attempts or a different device: The official guidance does not say these clear the restriction.
- A paid number or accessory: The documented remedy is another number; Google does not require a purchase for this error.
