If a new thumbnail is not appearing on a scheduled YouTube gaming rerun, first make sure you are editing the correct scheduled event in YouTube Studio. Check its saved thumbnail, reopen the event to confirm the change, and distinguish that upcoming stream from an older live replay. YouTube says thumbnail changes can take time to appear, but does not give a fixed delay or identify one cause for this specific problem.
Fix the thumbnail on the correct scheduled stream
- Open the intended event. In YouTube Studio, go to Live Control Room > Manage and select the scheduled stream. Confirm its title and date before changing anything. Studio also lists upcoming streams and past live replays under Content > Live; those are separate items. YouTube’s live-streaming help describes managing scheduled streams.
- Check whether you used Reuse settings. When a stream is created with reused settings, YouTube says the new stream copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key. Inspect the new event’s saved details for an inherited thumbnail or other old metadata. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the reuse option.
- Edit the thumbnail on that event and save. Use the thumbnail control shown for the selected stream type. YouTube’s general video instructions are Studio > Content > select the video > Thumbnail > Upload file > Save. For a scheduled encoder or mobile stream, metadata can be edited from the stream settings page or during scheduling; the controls may differ by workflow. YouTube’s thumbnail instructions cover uploading a custom video thumbnail.
- Reopen the event and verify the saved image. If Studio displays the new image, allow time for it to appear elsewhere on YouTube. YouTube notes that thumbnail changes may take time to show, but does not specify how long.
- Check the event when the encoder starts. In Live Control Room, confirm that the intended stream preview appears. Then check that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page. This confirms the feed is connected to the expected event; it does not mean the encoder controls the thumbnail. YouTube’s live control room guidance describes checking the stream preview.
- If the problem is with the archive, edit the replay instead. After the broadcast, find the item under Content > Live and verify the thumbnail on the live replay/video entry. Repeatedly changing the upcoming event will not correct a different replay item.
Work out which item or display is stale
Compare four things before making another edit: whether you are viewing the new scheduled stream or an older replay; whether the new event inherited settings; whether reopening the selected item shows the saved image; and whether the stale image appears in Studio or only on a public YouTube page. These checks help narrow down where the mismatch is, but YouTube’s published guidance does not identify a definitive root cause for this particular symptom.
If the thumbnail still looks unchanged
- Studio still shows the old image: Recheck the event title and date, choose the thumbnail control for that stream workflow, upload the intended file, save, and reopen the same item.
- Studio shows the new image but another YouTube surface does not: YouTube says changes may take time to appear, with no stated time limit. Verify that the public page belongs to the same scheduled event rather than a replay.
- The stream preview is for the wrong event: Stop and verify the selected scheduled event and its stream details before proceeding. A preview check establishes which feed is connected; it does not diagnose thumbnail handling.
- The scheduled item is correct but the archived replay is not: Open the replay as a separate video item and update its thumbnail there.
The available official guidance establishes that reused settings copy metadata, that custom thumbnails can be uploaded in Studio, and that upcoming streams and replays are distinct entries. It does not establish whether a particular stale thumbnail is caused by an unsaved edit, a wrong event, a display delay, an encoder, or a platform defect.
