It is not a required pixel canvas: YouTube accepts square or vertical videos that meet its duration and upload-date rules, and its Shorts guidance sets a maximum resolution of 1080p. Use a square frame when it suits the footage, and leave black bars or padding out of the export.
What size is a YouTube Short?
YouTube does not prescribe one exact width-by-height canvas for Shorts. Its format guidance sets a maximum resolution of 1080p, while eligibility depends on the video’s shape, length and upload date. For a tall portrait composition, 1080 × 1920 pixels is a useful 9:16 export target; for a square composition, 1080 × 1080 is a practical option. The square canvas is a recommendation, not a resolution specifically mandated by YouTube.
For clarity, “1080 × 1920” describes pixel dimensions and “9:16” describes the aspect ratio—the relationship between width and height. You can choose a different resolution while keeping the same shape, provided you stay within YouTube’s stated 1080p ceiling.
What aspect ratio should YouTube Shorts be?
Use 9:16 when you want a full-height vertical presentation, particularly when your source footage is portrait. Square video can also qualify, so 9:16 is not the only eligible shape. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance describes qualifying Shorts as square or vertical; a 16:9 landscape video does not fit that description.

The example canvases are practical choices, not a claim that YouTube requires those exact pixel counts. Choose the frame around the footage and intended composition, then export without embedded borders.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
For standard channels, YouTube categorizes eligible square or vertical videos up to three minutes long as Shorts when they are uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. A standard-channel video uploaded before that cutoff retains its former long-form classification.

Official Artist Channels have a separate cutoff: the same square-or-vertical and up-to-three-minute rule applies to uploads made on or after December 8, 2025. Earlier Official Artist Channel uploads retain their prior classification. These upload dates matter when interpreting an older video; the current rule does not retroactively reclassify every past upload.
Should you add black bars or padding?
No. YouTube advises: “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” The player adjusts to the video’s dimensions and the viewer’s device. On a computer browser, YouTube may display padding around a 9:16 vertical video; that padding is white by default and dark gray in Dark theme. Can I prevent my video from being turned into a Short?
If you want a video to remain long-form rather than meet Shorts’ shape criteria, YouTube recommends using a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9. A vertical or square upload may meet the shape requirement, so do not assume that only 9:16 video can be categorized as a Short. Upload and framing checklist
- Choose 9:16 for a tall portrait composition, or square for footage and layouts that suit a 1:1 frame.
- For portrait, use 1080 × 1920 pixels as a practical target; for square, 1080 × 1080 is a practical canvas rather than an official requirement.
- Keep the export within YouTube’s maximum Shorts resolution of 1080p.
- Check whether the duration and upload date qualify under the rules for your channel type.
- Do not add black bars or padding to force the player into a shape; let YouTube adapt presentation to the video and device.
Make a gaming clip fit the frame
For gameplay recorded in landscape, cropping to 9:16 can remove important action at the edges. Before export, check that the key gameplay, HUD, captions and any on-screen text remain visible inside the portrait crop. If keeping the full game image matters more than filling a tall frame, a square composition may suit the source better; it can qualify as a Short under the same duration and date rules.
