OBS error 10054 on Windows means an existing network connection was reset by its peer. It identifies a connection failure, not who caused it: the error alone does not prove that YouTube, OBS, your router, Wi-Fi, firewall, or another device is responsible. Work through reversible OBS and network checks before replacing hardware.
What OBS error 10054 means
Windows identifies error 10054 as WSAECONNRESET: “An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.” Microsoft notes that a reset can occur for several reasons, including the peer application stopping, a host or remote network interface being disabled, or keep-alive activity detecting a failure. The code reports what happened to the connection; it does not name the device or company at fault. Microsoft’s Windows Sockets Error Codes reference does not establish a YouTube-specific cause.
OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server, or a connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate. The cause may be outside OBS Studio’s control. Its connection guide, dated September 30, 2024, recommends the checks below. Menu labels and options can vary by OBS version. Try these checks in order
1. Check the stream server and bitrate
If the streaming service offers another server or ingest endpoint, try it and see whether the disconnections stop. Then compare OBS’s video bitrate with your stable upload capacity and the service’s bitrate limits. OBS’s 2024 guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guaranteed YouTube setting: upload capacity can fluctuate, and the service’s own limits still apply.

Lowering the bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain your current setting, but it reduces the amount of video data sent and can affect quality. Change one setting at a time and observe whether the connection becomes more stable.
2. Test OBS’s Windows network options
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
- Leave Bind to IP set to Default, as OBS recommends.
- On Windows, test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. Change options one at a time so you can tell whether a test makes a difference.
- You can also test IPv4 Only. If it does not help, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting.
- Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment can help OBS respond when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying network issue and may reduce video quality.
3. Temporarily isolate software interference
A VPN may make the connection unstable, and security software can interfere with traffic from OBS to the streaming server. Temporarily test without the suspected software, changing one thing at a time. If security software is confirmed as the cause, add an OBS exception and re-enable protection; do not leave protection disabled as a workaround. Bundled network-prioritization utilities are another possible source of interference.

4. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If you stream over Wi-Fi, test a wired connection to see whether the local wireless link is contributing to the problem. This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix: a wired test cannot rule out problems elsewhere on the path to the ingest server. OBS also lists cables, network cards, modem or router equipment, switches, and extenders as possible hardware trouble spots. Try existing equipment before buying replacements; ask your ISP if you are unsure what to replace.
5. Update the network driver and restart the modem and router
Get the latest network driver from your computer or motherboard manufacturer. OBS also recommends restarting both the modem and router. If the connection still drops after these checks, contact your ISP and describe when the disconnections occur; congestion or routing outside your home network may need its help.

Choose the next test by what it can tell you

When the problem needs ISP help
If OBS still disconnects after you have checked its settings, tested for software interference, compared Wi-Fi with wired networking where practical, updated the network driver, and restarted the modem and router, contact your ISP. Explain that the stream intermittently disconnects and share when it happens. Error 10054 alone cannot establish whether the issue lies with YouTube’s ingest service, your ISP, or another part of the network path.
