Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Switching OBS from x264 to Intel Quick Sync (QSV) does not by itself prove why your YouTube stream is losing frames. First check which OBS counter is rising: Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection or bitrate, while rendering lag and encoding lag point to performance in OBS’s render or encode pipeline. The fix depends on that distinction.
Identify which OBS counter is increasing
Open View > Docks > Stats in OBS and watch the counters during a representative stream. Note the time and preserve the OBS log from the run; a log can help distinguish a network problem from rendering or encoding pressure. “Drops frames” is an everyday description, not a diagnosis.
- Dropped Frames (Network): OBS says this indicates an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or that the configured bitrate cannot be sustained. It does not, on its own, mean the encoder is overloaded. (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, September 30, 2024.)
- Frames Missed due to Rendering Lag: OBS is struggling to render or composite frames in time. GPU capacity, scene complexity, resolution, and frame rate can contribute.
- Skipped Frames due to Encoding Lag: OBS is not encoding frames quickly enough. Check system load and encoder behavior while the problem is happening.
If none of these counters rises, record what YouTube reports in stream health and when the visible problem occurs. The title alone cannot establish that frames are being lost inside OBS.
If Dropped Frames (Network) rises
Investigate the route from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server and whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says network-dropped frames are very unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself; that general guidance is not a diagnosis of your particular setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Compare bitrate with reliable upload capacity. Check upload performance under conditions like the stream—ideally while other household or workplace traffic is accounted for. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee. If the connection cannot reliably carry the configured bitrate, lower the stream bitrate and test again.
- Try another ingest server if available. A different route to YouTube may behave differently.
- Check network software and drivers. Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, bundled network-optimization utilities, and outdated network drivers. Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether it matters.
- Check the physical path if there is reason to suspect it. Test with a known-good Ethernet cable or network hardware if the wired connection or hardware is suspect. OBS lists faulty network hardware among possible causes; replacing equipment is not a fix for rendering or encoding lag.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a mitigation. OBS can lower bitrate when congestion occurs, which may reduce network drops but also lowers video quality; it does not repair the underlying connection fault.
OBS’s connection guide also describes Windows-only network optimizations, including TCP pacing. It advises returning the IP family setting to its default if switching to IPv4 does not help. Treat these as targeted troubleshooting options, not universal settings to change preemptively.
If rendering or encoding lag rises
Reproduce the issue in the most demanding scene or game and watch OBS Statistics and the log. OBS must use GPU resources to composite and render the scene, even when encoding is assigned to hardware. A GPU saturated by an uncapped game or other work may leave too little capacity for OBS.

- For rendering lag: cap the game’s frame rate or reduce its graphics workload; simplify scenes; and test removing resource-intensive sources or filters.
- For either performance counter: test a lower output resolution or change output from 60 fps to 30 fps. These reduce workload, but also change the stream’s resolution or motion smoothness.
- On Windows: OBS says running as administrator can help resolve GPU overload in some cases.
Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene. These are tests against performance symptoms, not guaranteed fixes. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide discusses GPU capacity, scene complexity, frame rate, and output resolution as factors in real-time performance.
Check Quick Sync compatibility and compare it fairly with x264
QSV shifts encoding work away from the CPU to Intel’s hardware encoder, but that does not guarantee the entire OBS pipeline will perform better on every machine. OBS lists QSV support on Windows and Linux with Intel HD Graphics on Core-i CPUs from generation 2xxx (Sandy Bridge) or newer, and recommends Core-i 4xxx (Haswell) or newer because early QSV generations produced lower image quality. Check that the Intel graphics hardware and current driver are available to OBS. If your system has another graphics adapter, OBS advises using the primary graphics adapter’s hardware encoder—for example, NVENC on NVIDIA or AMF on AMD—where appropriate. See the OBS Project hardware encoding guidance.

There is no universal winner between x264 and QSV supported by these sources. Compare what your machine actually does: which counter rises, CPU and GPU headroom in the demanding scene, stream stability at your target settings, and image quality at the same bitrate.
- Preserve or duplicate your existing OBS profile so you can return to it.
- Keep the scene, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and test duration the same.
- Change only the encoder between x264 and QSV; record the OBS counter changes and keep both logs.
- Use a test with movement and audio resembling the real stream, and check YouTube stream health. YouTube’s encoder guidance asks creators to test with representative audio and movement before going live.
This controlled comparison can show whether the encoder change coincides with a reproducible performance difference on your system. If Network drops rise, investigate the connection even if the change began after switching to QSV.

Check YouTube’s encoder settings against your stream
YouTube’s current guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum. Select the bitrate row matching the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use; compare it with stable upload capacity rather than assuming that a published target guarantees your connection can sustain it.
For one specific reference point, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. That is YouTube’s recommended bitrate entry, not a measurement of your upload capacity or a guarantee of required bandwidth. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the row matching your stream. The page does not show a publication date; it was accessed October 3, 2026.
