YouTube Stream Drops Frames on Ethernet: Test Packet Loss and Upload Limits

Ethernet rules out Wi-Fi interference on the local link, not upload limits or network instability. Test stream health, bitrate headroom, and the local cable in order.

A wired Ethernet connection rules out Wi-Fi interference on the computer’s local link, but it does not guarantee a stable stream. Dropped frames can point to insufficient upload capacity, a faulty local cable or port, congestion elsewhere on the network, or instability between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server. Compare your stream’s total bitrate with sustained upload capacity, check YouTube and OBS indicators during a representative test, and change one setting at a time. OBS’s dropped-frame indicator signals a network or bitrate problem; it is not a measured packet-loss percentage. OBS Project’s troubleshooting guide explains that distinction.

First identify what is dropping frames

In OBS, network-dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate trouble sustaining the connection to the selected remote server or the configured bitrate. That does not by itself identify packet loss, prove the Ethernet cable is faulty, or establish that YouTube is at fault. Check OBS alongside stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

Also separate transmission trouble from a poor picture or sound produced before the stream leaves your computer. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, dashboard errors, CPU load, and a local recording when stream quality is poor. If the local recording or encoder preview is already choppy, investigate the source or encoding workload before blaming the network. See YouTube’s streaming troubleshooting guidance and the OBS guide.

Test upload capacity against your stream bitrate

Download speed is not the relevant figure for sending a live stream. Compare the available outbound upload bandwidth with the total bitrate your encoder is sending. YouTube notes that outbound capacity is often lower than inbound capacity and advises allowing 20% spare upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. Other people and devices sharing the connection can consume that headroom. YouTube’s guidance states: “The total bitrate of your stream cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Run an upload test while the problem is occurring, then compare its result with the encoder’s configured total stream bitrate. A single peak result is not proof that the connection can sustain the stream throughout a broadcast, nor does a generic speed test establish that the route to YouTube is free of packet loss. Use the test as one clue and monitor stream health during a representative test stream.

Choose YouTube’s bitrate target for your codec and output

YouTube’s recommended encoder rates depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 figures below are from YouTube Help, checked on 2026-10-03; the page is undated and recommendations can change. Do not apply an H.264 figure to AV1 or H.265: consult the linked table for the codec you use.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps

For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its encoder settings guidance also gives different minimum and recommended rates for AV1 and H.265.

Run a controlled troubleshooting test

  1. Reproduce the real workload. Before the public stream, run a private or otherwise suitable test with movement and audio similar to the event. Watch OBS’s network-dropped-frame status and YouTube Live Control Room stream health. Note the time, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether other devices are uploading. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health; recording these details makes runs easier to compare. See YouTube’s streaming tips and its streaming setup guidance.
  2. Check the source and encoder first. If the encoder preview or local recording is also bad, inspect audio and video sources, encoder errors, and CPU load. If those are clean but the feed is not reaching YouTube reliably, focus on outbound connectivity. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps cover these checks.
  3. Check sustained upload headroom. Compare upload capacity during the issue with your configured total stream bitrate, including the recommended 20% available headroom. Consider activity from other users and devices. If capacity is too close to the bitrate or falls below it, the connection may not sustain the stream.
  4. Lower the stream’s demand one change at a time. Use YouTube’s recommended rate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate, then lower bitrate if the connection cannot maintain it. If needed, reduce resolution or frame rate as well. Retest after each change to see which adjustment affects the result. OBS dynamic bitrate can lower the rate during congestion to manage dropped frames, but it does not fix the underlying connection and can reduce video quality. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
  5. Check the local Ethernet link. Inspect connectors and link status; if available, try a known-good cable and a different router or switch port. These are controlled local checks, not guaranteed fixes, and they cannot diagnose problems farther along the route to YouTube. YouTube discusses unplugging an encoder’s Ethernet cable specifically in its backup-encoder failover test, not as a general cure for dropped frames.
  6. Escalate with evidence. If outbound tests show a connection problem, YouTube advises contacting your ISP. If issues persist only when sending to a particular ingest route, keep timestamps and encoder logs for troubleshooting; do not label the cause packet loss unless you have a measurement that establishes it. OBS notes that dropped frames signal an unstable remote-server connection or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate, not a packet-loss percentage. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance and OBS’s guide.

What the results can—and cannot—tell you

  • Upload capacity is inadequate or has little headroom: reduce the configured bitrate and, if required, resolution or frame rate. Retest with other household or office uploads accounted for.
  • The encoder preview or local archive is also poor: investigate sources, CPU load, or encoder errors; a cable swap will not correct a problem already present in the local output.
  • A known-good cable or alternate port changes the result: that is evidence the local link deserves attention, but it does not identify every possible fault in the network path.
  • Upload capacity appears adequate but OBS still reports network drops: a speed result alone cannot rule out connection instability between the computer and ingest server. Compare repeated representative tests and contact your ISP if YouTube’s outbound tests show problems.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your issue is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running around the clock rather than diagnosing a live gaming encoder, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams what you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
