If your YouTube stream goes offline after you switch OBS from RTMP to RTMPS, first verify that OBS is using the RTMPS server URL provided in YouTube Live Control Room and the current stream key. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, so changing protocols also means using the matching secure endpoint. The title alone does not identify the cause; the error shown by OBS or YouTube determines the next check.
Why switching to RTMPS can take the stream offline
YouTube supports RTMPS, which it describes as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” It is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection. You therefore need both the RTMPS protocol and the matching server URL; changing only one setting can leave OBS trying to connect with mismatched details. YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance explains how to obtain the secure endpoint and what to check for SSL errors and timeouts.
The server URL and stream key do different jobs: the URL directs the feed to YouTube, while the key allows YouTube to accept it. A valid URL paired with an outdated or incorrect key can fail just as a wrong endpoint can. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers these fields and stream-key management.
Check the RTMPS URL and stream key in OBS
- Get the secure URL from YouTube. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and go to Stream settings. Reveal or copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so make sure you deliberately select the RTMPS URL rather than copying the default.
- Set OBS to use YouTube’s RTMPS details. In OBS, use the YouTube RTMPS service option or preset if it is available. Otherwise, enter the full RTMPS server URL copied from Live Control Room and confirm the URL uses the
rtmpsscheme. - Re-copy the current stream key. Paste the key for the intended stream from Live Control Room into OBS. Check for accidental spaces or a key from another stream.
- Start the stream and inspect both OBS and Live Control Room. Confirm OBS begins sending and that YouTube receives the feed. If it still fails, use the exact error message to choose the next check below.

Match the fix to the error
OBS reports an SSL or certificate error
Recheck that the server URL is the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube and that it has not been mistyped or truncated. YouTube recommends trying port 443 for an SSL error. Use the YouTube-provided endpoint and change the port only as appropriate in the URL or encoder port setting; do not invent a different server address.
OBS times out while connecting
Verify the server URL and confirm that your installed OBS version supports RTMPS. Then check whether the outbound connection is working. A timeout is a reason to investigate the endpoint, encoder support, and network path before changing video quality settings. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance describes these checks.

OBS connects, but YouTube does not accept the feed
Copy the current stream key again from Live Control Room and verify that the feed is going to the intended stream. Inspect OBS’s local output to confirm the video and audio are present. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and the stream key when a feed is not working as expected.
OBS starts, then the stream drops or becomes unstable
After confirming the endpoint and key, check whether the connection can sustain the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within available outbound bandwidth, with about 20% additional bandwidth as headroom. Network interruptions can break a live stream. Test with a similar amount of motion and audio to the intended broadcast, rather than relying only on a brief idle scene. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check encoder settings only after connection details
A stream going offline immediately after a protocol change does not by itself point to a bitrate or keyframe problem. First correct the RTMPS URL and key. If those are right and the feed remains unstable, confirm OBS is current and review the encoder settings against YouTube’s recommendations.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and sets a maximum of four seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocol options.
- Testing: Test the planned settings and network conditions before relying on the stream.
These are general encoder recommendations, not proof that an incorrect bitrate or keyframe interval caused this particular outage. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Troubleshooting checklist
- RTMPS URL: Copied from the correct stream’s settings in Live Control Room, not the default RTMP URL.
- Protocol: OBS is configured for RTMPS and the URL begins with
rtmps. - Stream key: Current, copied from the intended stream, and entered without extra characters.
- SSL error: URL rechecked; try port 443 as YouTube advises.
- Timeout: RTMPS support confirmed for the installed encoder; outbound connection checked.
- Feed rejected or missing: Key re-copied and OBS’s local audio/video output inspected.
- Unstable connection: Available upload bandwidth compared with total stream bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Persistent failure: Update OBS, then repeat a controlled test while watching the exact status or error in OBS and Live Control Room.
YouTube’s general checks for encoder and connection problems are in its live-stream troubleshooting guide.
