Changing an OBS scene collection is not documented as something that ends a YouTube stream. OBS separates scene collections—which store scenes and sources—from Profiles, which store stream and output settings. If your broadcast drops at the same time as a collection switch, treat that timing as a clue, then check the active Profile, OBS status and logs, network connection, and system load.
Does changing an OBS scene collection stop a YouTube stream?
OBS says scene collections save scenes and sources, including Global Audio Sources, and explicitly states: “Scene Collections do not store output settings. Use Profiles.” Profiles hold most output-related settings, including Stream, Video, and Output, and OBS allows Profiles and scene collections to be mixed and matched. That means a collection switch is not, by itself, evidence that OBS changed your stream key or ended the stream.
Official OBS guidance does not establish that changing a collection inherently takes a YouTube broadcast offline. The cause has to be identified from what OBS was doing when the interruption occurred: output configuration, network connection, or rendering and encoding performance are the main branches to examine.
Check the active Profile and stream configuration
- Confirm the active Profile. In OBS, check the selected Profile and verify the stream settings it contains. Profiles store output-related settings; collections do not.
- Verify the destination and credentials. Check the configured service, server, and stream key or connected account. Confirm that the Profile you intend to use is active, especially if you switched Profiles as well as collections.
- Make one controlled test. Before going public, test the collection switch while monitoring whether OBS continues to send. OBS recommends testing scenes and stream operation in advance.
OBS documents those configuration roles and testing practices, but it does not promise that a specific YouTube session will survive every interruption or identify a YouTube-specific timeout threshold.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Diagnose what happened at the moment of the drop
Check OBS’s status indicators and logs around the exact time the stream went offline. Look for whether OBS stopped sending, reported dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, or showed rendering or encoding overload. The distinction matters: a network warning points toward the connection to the ingest server, while performance trouble during a collection change may point to the scenes or sources being loaded.
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: investigate the network path between your computer and the remote ingest server.
- Rendering or encoding overload: examine the load created by the active scenes, sources, and collection switch.
- No clear OBS warning: verify the active Profile and stream configuration, then reproduce the switch safely and observe the status again.
Fix network instability and dropped frames
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. It recommends checking server selection and bitrate, testing another service to help distinguish service-specific problems, and examining software and hardware factors.

- Use a stable wired connection when possible. OBS identifies Wi-Fi as a possible source of instability and recommends wired networking for streaming. Ethernet may help when Wi-Fi is the issue, but it is not a guaranteed fix for a collection-switch interruption.
- Check upload capacity and bitrate. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a general starting suggestion. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: available upload capacity can fluctuate, and other devices or applications may use it.
- Check the selected server and connection path. Try another available ingest server where appropriate. Investigate VPNs, security software, network drivers, the router, cable, and other possible points of failure.
- Use a comparison test carefully. OBS suggests testing another service to help determine whether the trouble is specific to one service. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that YouTube or OBS is at fault.
Reduce load in complex scene collections
OBS notes that complex scenes and large collections can use more system resources. Some sources may continue consuming resources even when they are not visible. If the problem coincides with loading a particular collection, simplify the collections involved and test again.
- Remove or reduce resource-intensive sources, including costly browser sources, when they are not needed.
- Keep collections focused rather than carrying a large set of scenes and sources into every workflow.
- Observe rendering and encoding status during the switch to see whether the change affects performance.
These steps can address performance problems; they are not a guaranteed cure for a stream session ending.

Use automatic reconnect as recovery, not prevention
OBS documents an automatic reconnect option in Advanced settings. Review that setting if a connection interruption is causing your stream to stop, and test the behavior before relying on it for a public broadcast. Reconnect can help OBS recover from an interruption; it does not remove the underlying network or performance problem, and OBS does not guarantee that a particular YouTube live session will be preserved.
Prevent surprises before going live
- Choose the intended OBS Profile and verify its service, server, and stream key or account connection.
- Test the scenes and the collection changes you plan to use, while watching OBS status.
- Check the network connection and system performance during the test, not only before it.
- If the test drops, note the exact OBS status or log message and troubleshoot that branch before broadcasting publicly.
