A switch from 1080p to 720p is a good time to recheck your encoder, but it does not identify the cause of a YouTube stream-health warning by itself. Open the event’s Live Control Room, read the exact message under Stream status, then verify what your encoder is actually sending: resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. Also check bitrate mode, keyframe interval and upload capacity before changing settings.
Start with the exact Stream status message
In YouTube Studio, open the live event in Live Control Room and inspect Stream status. YouTube says this area displays specific error messages and instructions; follow the message shown for your event. The exact warning is not specified here, so it is not possible to identify a single cause from the resolution change alone. If you are asking for help, copy the complete message along with your encoder settings rather than paraphrasing it. YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance advises creators to monitor stream health during the event.
Verify the outgoing video settings
Check the encoder’s active output, not just the settings displayed on the YouTube setup page. Confirm that the outgoing resolution is actually 1280×720, and note the frame rate, codec and video bitrate. A configured 720p output can still be mismatched if the encoder is sending a different resolution or frame rate.
Automatic or manual resolution detection
YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. Manual resolution selection is available when using a custom stream key. If you have enabled a manual resolution, make sure it agrees with the encoder’s output; otherwise, consider returning to automatic detection. See YouTube’s stream setup guidance.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare live bitrate targets by codec and frame rate
Use the live-ingestion figures below as YouTube recommendations, not a diagnosis. The figures vary by codec; the appropriate target also depends on your actual output. YouTube’s guidance does not display a publication date.
| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations; they are not measured outcomes. The 1080p figures may help you compare the prior configuration, but they should not be treated as the target once the encoder is correctly sending 720p. Confirm the codec and frame rate before adjusting bitrate. YouTube Help: live encoder settings.

Check bitrate mode, keyframes and supported frame rate
- Bitrate mode: use CBR (constant bitrate), as recommended in YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance.
- Keyframes: set the interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Codec: verify the encoder is using a supported video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1.
- Frame rate: YouTube guidance supports up to 60 fps. Make sure the selected frame rate matches the encoder output.
These settings are checks, not proof that any one setting caused the warning. Consult YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and use the specific Stream status message to decide which issue to address first.
Test upload capacity and leave bandwidth headroom
Run an outbound speed test while your connection is in realistic use, then compare the result with your stream bitrate and other simultaneous traffic. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom. Upload capacity can be lower than download capacity, and shared office connections may have other users competing for upload bandwidth. Account for any additional streams or network use instead of treating one internet-speed number as universally sufficient. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recommends checking upload speed and leaving room.

Do not use video-upload bitrate figures for a live stream
YouTube’s separate upload-video table lists 5 Mbps for 720p at standard frame rates and 7.5 Mbps at high frame rates. Those figures apply to uploading a video file, not to a live encoder sending a stream. For a live stream, use the ingestion recommendations above for your codec and frame rate. YouTube’s upload guidance does not display a publication date. YouTube video upload encoding settings.
Troubleshoot in a controlled order
- Capture the warning. Read the complete Stream status text in Live Control Room and follow its instructions.
- Confirm actual output. In the encoder, check that the outgoing resolution is 1280×720 and record the frame rate, codec and bitrate.
- Resolve any detection mismatch. Check whether the stream key uses automatic or manual resolution detection. If manual selection is active, align it with the encoder output.
- Compare bitrate appropriately. Use the 720p live-ingestion recommendation for the actual codec and frame rate; do not carry over a 1080p target without checking the current output.
- Verify encoding behavior. Check CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, never exceeding four seconds, and confirm the frame rate is no more than 60 fps.
- Check network headroom. Test upload under realistic conditions and account for other traffic, aiming to leave 20% capacity beyond the stream’s needs.
- Recheck Stream status. After changing a setting, monitor the event’s status again. If the warning remains, use its exact text and your updated settings to narrow the next step.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs a prerecorded video or playlist to stay live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option—not a fix for an encoder warning on a camera-based live stream. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It sends the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
